Great news. I wonder if Brazil will now have a reckoning with itself. It needs one.

I was completely unaware of this event, but it is good news and will hopefully lead to more good news.

And save the people who call the rain forest their home.

I heard on the World Service that the defeated Bolsonaro will do a 'Trump' and claim that he lost to fraud and refuse to leave office. I hope there's no violence.

The result was extremely close - 50.9% to 49.10%.

What a relief. Too many countries are now led by right wing authoritarian regimes.

Bolsanaro's corruption and total disregard for life has endangered us all. Lula may be far from perfect but he will steer Brazil in a better direction.

As an aside, the election process in Brazil is entirely electronic that's why the result is known almost immediately.

Had tears in my eyes with relief at hearing the news this morning.

And I don't give a fig about da Silva's corruption - so long as the Amazon rainforest stands a chance, that's all that matters.

Reading between the lines it appeared that da Silva's alleged corruption was a handy excuse for Bolsonaro. Am I misinterpreting that?

I don't know whether you're misinterpreting anything, but da Silva was imprisoned for corruption for 18 months. However, it looks as though there was corruption going on behind the imprisonment, too.

I don't care, though, he can be as corrupt as he likes as long as he does something to protect the rainforest, IMO.

To me our system is at least more fraud-proof.
Anything can be hacked into nowadays - electronic voting systems included.

Lula's historic victory, unthinkable just two years ago, couldn’t have happened without millions of people fighting for it. As Bolsonaro supporters refuse to accept the results, the mobilisation of those masses will be key to securing democracy.
