Liz Truss way ahead? If so who are these voters who are going to vote? They apparently are going to vote for someone who is prepared to ignore the Bank of England as she knows better. She is not an economist and is willing to throw money in all directions to gain her objective. Are these polls and the results manipulated by the Daily Mail and its audacious support of aJohnson candidate in order to gain a peerage for its editor.

Can we really believe these polls?
(25 Posts)It is weird. The BoE is raising interest rates to try to suppress spending and thereby inflation.
Truss is cutting tax and thus encouraging spending.
Can you imagine the chaos?
I keep hoping not.
First of all I don’t vote Tory but it’s interesting that from early on she was named as the probable winner, despite her poor start. Sure enough, she is in the last 2 and still seen as the winner. I am not feel confident she is PM material, however what does that matter these days. Nada! Not 100% about the other candidate either but on balance....
The press and media in general are powerful and able to push their or others’ agenda by what they print or report, so if they wanted Liz Truss to win, and it seems they did, its easily done.
Why would the party want to appoint a PM who will be a useless liability and almost certainly very unpopular? What is the agenda?
Here's an interesting poll result.

How about this being a cunning plot to make LT appear totally useless (not difficult, it seems) so that RS does in fact win? Although some of his ideas don't seem credible either, if he was the winner there might be a sigh of relief all round that it wasn't as bad as we expected.
Conspiracy theorist, moi?
Just a reminder that Sunak isn't an economist, either. Don't be fooled by his success at acquiring money. It has nothing to do with economic knowledge.
I understand that Truss's tax cutting proposals cut tax for companies rather than individuals - perhaps someone could put me right on this? In which case, they don't benefit 'ordinary' people at all.
Sunak proposes to launch us into austerity on top of a recession, that's really clever, isn't it?
They neither of them have a clue about the workings of a national economy. Or perhaps they deliberately wish to impoverish the working population of the UK...
O, for heavens sake' stop all this stupid blaming the press for anything happening that you do not like. Why if all the people on here are totally unimpressed and unaffected by what the media says. why should the rest of the population act differently,.
Unless of course the people posting here are arrogant enough to consider themselves to be intellectually a cut above the rest of the population and able to understand things they do not.
Members of the Conservative party have been asked to choose between the two leadership contenders with most support from Conservative MPs. I am sure they have all independently made their own assessment of the leadership qualities of the two contenders. As well as everything in the papers and other media - and these cover the whole political spectrum, they will have had mailings from the candidates and talked among themselves.
Their decision will be made as they best see things. It is hardly to be expected that their views will concur with those who are not members of the Conservative party. Those of us who do not support the Conservatives have no monopoly on virtue.

Odd that the press aren't recommending tory voters in tory constituencies to consider how their own MPs are reacting.

A bit of passive aggression there, MOnica?
When my young hairdresser earlier this week asks me if Truss and Sunak are Conservatives, I rather think that some of us do have a better understanding of what is going on.
What's passive aggressive about it. I have never been passive aggressive in my life
Of course some peope know more than others. Was your hairdresser a card carrying member of the Conservative party, because they are the only ones voting in this election?
Providing Conservative party members know who the two candidates are and can make an independent decision between the two, this election, it really doesn't matter whether anybody else has heard of them.
It is worth remembering that none of us know the depths of our own ignorance - and that includes you and me.
I don't suppose your hairdresser is a member of the Conservative Party, though, MaizieD so has as little influence on the outcome as most of us on here.
I understand what M0nica is saying, that Conservative Party members are politically minded individuals who are well able to decide which candidate they prefer.
The rest of us will have to abide by their decision until the next GE.

Put much more neatly and succinctly Callistemon
Well, I didn't think you were being passive aggressive

I wonder if anyone on here is a Conservative Party member, so this is all academic.

You are right to highlight that, as the Financial Times tells us, it will be scarcely 0.3% of the adult British population voting.
The OP asks "Can we really believe these polls?" It was interesting last night that, when they saw the show of hands poll at the end of the debate, those who will have been following the published figures were very surprised.
That doesn't mean the polls are wrong. It does show that posters do not show the depths of their ignorance when they ask the question.
Well the voting record of members of the Tory party is worrying after the mess they made of it last time.

I didn't feel there was any need to imply that other posters are arrogant know it alls. It was, let's say, a trifle challenging.
But, everyone sees things differently, don't they?
Yes I think that you can believe the polls. These are the people who put Johnson in charge, who still cheer at the mention of his name.

This are the people who got it wrong about Brexit.

My hairdresser doesn't do news. But I love her nevertheless!

I am a Tory voter but do not cheer at the mention of Boris's name. I will be happier to vote Tory now he has gone.

And?
Can you please provide some evidence that, as a result of its founders being conservatives, its political polling (a fraction of its work) has been inaccurate in favour of, or providing some advantage to, the Tories?

Which one will you pick, that you will trust to get out of this terrible mess and inflation disaster?
