Just saw an interesting feature on The Sunday Politics. Local authorities are now required to 'open their books', as the public has a legal right to inspect, question and challenge items in their council’s accounts.
A volunteer group, The Peoples' Audit have published a report about Lambeth Council, where they've uncovered significant financial mismanagement.

Lambeth Council have responded by refusing filming on certain housing estates and attacking The Peoples' Audit.
I quite like the idea of 'armchair auditors', whatever their political affiliations. I think it's an interesting way to hold local councils to account.
