I read the original article, and having read the follow-up Hikikomori experiences, it really is very saddening that many young people feel so alienated from society in such a way.

That is very sad. I can see how it could very easily happen with young people. Especially if they have a hard time trying to get a first job. Someone I know went through a phase like this. Spent all the time editing Wikipaedia. I bet they all have computers in their rooms. Bad times.
