Ewhurst/Cranleigh

My DIL was brought up in Cranleigh (Surrey), which she described as either a large village or small town. She found it a bit limiting and went to London, where she and my son still live. Her parents still live there and seem to like it. I think it has a fairly strong community spirit.

We have close family in Cranleigh, they’ve lived there over 30 years, brought up their family there and really like it.
I must say, whenever we’ve visited, it’s made a very good impression. The High street has a lot of really good shops and restaurants, although Covid may have impacted on it.
There seems to be a good community spirit.

Thanks J52, we did visit Cranleigh and liked the high Street. I think it’s a good possibility for us to move to.

I moved recently, I'm about 10 miles from Cranleigh, I don't know it well, it looks very pretty though, we've stopped there a couple of times for coffee in the high street. I think it's lovely countryside between fairly nearby Godalming and Cranleigh. Cranleigh's nearest railway station is over 5 miles away, for some people that might be a downside.

Good luck if you decide to move to either of those areas.

May I make a suggestion? There is a huge amount of development planned in the south of the UK. Please check carefully with local councils or any other local authority to see what is planned in the area you are looking at. Online FB pages or other local online sources are good places to check to see if locals are worried.

Google says it's 2 and a half hours from Waterloo! And that's using a bus from Shalford that runs 5x a week.
When I lived a few miles from there in 1980s, public transport (so important as we get older and can't drive) was not high on the local agenda. I moved.

We lived in Cranleigh when our children were very small, I loved it! Used to walk into the centre with the pram, and get all my groceries there.There were all kinds of shops, a lovely church and a pretty green.I used to see Tony Hart regularly, he was always in the bakers ( so it seemed.)
I lived at the top of a long road leading into the centre, called (I think) Park Lane or Park Road.I was very sad to leave there actually, as I could get the bus into Guildford for clothes shopping, and used to go to a very good small theatre there,
