Shower cubicles

If its at all possible in your bathroom go for a walk in shower with no doors, we took out our bath put in a long shower tray and a glass shower panel with a short flipper bit at the end its hard to describe but having no doors makes it so much easier to clean and there is nothing to break I'll try and find a pic as its hard to describe.,. The flipper part moves so once you walk in you can pull it around to create a partial barrier to save splashing too much it works perfectly.

I meant to add it takes up the same space as the bath used to.

suzied I had a new shower fitted around 2 years ago. I would avoid the concertina doors like the plague becaue I have to have a shower or at least fully strip before I can wash my hair. Also to clean it thoroughly, again I have to be in the buff! Not practical.

My showerhead leaked a few weeks ago. The broken component could not be replaced because there were no spare parts for this particular type so the entire bar had to be replaced. This is where I turn a knob to switch it on or off.

I am left handed so this shower is more for a left handed person. A right handed person may have difficulty.

Think ahead, mine is big enough for a shower stool which I use. I deliberately did not get a seat attached to the tiled walls because I have ben told that they work their way loose over time.

I agree, if you have the space, a wet room would be the best option especially for cleaning and maintenance.

I am puzzled as to the difference Charleygirl between left or right handed showers?

I think it may be where the bar was fitted. It suits me perfectly as I cannot turn or twist. The showerhead is also more towards the left hand corner than centre so I would have difficulty grabbing it using my r) hand.

Thanks for that I want to avoid those sliding doors as they are a real pain and are completely scaled up and mildewed and there is no way to clean the grooves unless you take the whole thing apart which is impossible. I bet it was designed by a man, the little roller things they slide on are broken and again there is no way of repairing or changing them. I like the idea of the walk in one I will definitely have a good look at this.

The round part comes out 90cm from the wall but the narrow rectangular bit at the end is only about 70cm, so it fits between the door and the wall. Without that we were very restricted to the depth of the shower. It is really spacious. When DH needed a hand there was room for both of us without soaking the floor.

The shower head is on the wall at the narrow end and we put a handrail on the other wall, which i find invaluable for hanging things to drip dry, as well as to hold onto.

suzied I would also recommend not getting a fixed head shower as you can't turn it on to clean without getting soaked, ours is movable like the one in the picture so I just get in there barefoot to clean the tray, the glass has only needed a proper clean once in 18mths as it has a special coating that throws off the water easily so no water marks, I have one of those rubber scraper things you use for the car to swish the water off the glass and it stays sparkling and clean. Its been such a success we don't miss the bath one bit.

We had a long shower tray with a glass screen only and it is brilliant. Easy to clean but I do urge caution re slipping. The 'do da' where the water drains has a cover which is very easily removed but by crikey doesn't it get mucky quick. You will need to clean it every week or two.

When we had it installed I was so pleased but I slipped and went down like a 'spatchcock chicken' . It was so painful and I thought I had dislocated my hip and I slid so badly my ankle went over the end of the tray and the other 'tuther' end. Ooh er misses. We bought foam matting which does not slip and can be washed and then thrown away as it is so cheap to buy.

To stop slipping I stand on a teatowel. While the water is running from cold to hot, I hold the teatowel in front of my shins like a matador to fend off the cold splashes.

It is better than those rubber mats, which get manky underneath. It can be flung into the washing machinbe.

Where did that b come from?

I hate rubber mats so slippy. Foam is much better.

Does anyone have a shower seat? Might be good for scrubbing feet?

Also my DH wants one of those rain shower drench heads are they any good? We've only had them in hotels.

We have the lift off and rain shower types. The Rain shower is great if you intend to wash your hair as well. Shower caps do not stand up to them if you want to keep your hair dry. Blokes like rain showers. X

Pogs The shower is big enough for me to stand far enough away for the angle of the water to hit my legs, not my boobs. They are well out of range until it it nicely warmed up.

I hate overhead, straight-down shower heads. Always make me feel I am drowning.

Mine is a lift off. It shares it's tiny compartment with the wc which doubles as a shower seat.

We are in the process of having our shower room refitted, expensive but necessary as water was leaking out of the shower cubicle and rotting floorboards etc. One of the joys , is a double shower head which has a rain shower head and a "normal" one when you want to avoid wet hair etc. They are made by Mira and incorporate a pump! Sound amazing, but I will update when it is actually installed.
Old shower cubicle incorporated a wooden seat which was great at first but lead to the walls springing apart and causing the aforementioned leak.
I love those sheet of glass ones you get in hotels, but they take a lot of space which we do not have without removing the bath. Our house did not have a bath when we bought it and that had deterred a lot of buyers, so with an eye to future sales, we don't want to go down that route. Lots of decisions aren't there?

Look for the shower shower trays with non-slip surface its worth the extra cost to avoid a slip or having to use something that then needs cleaning.

My bathroom is completely tiled so I have a memory foam mat to step on to after my shower. This is perfect, it never slips. I bought it cheaply in Dunelm Mill.

We thought we had done our best by buying a so called non-slip surface but I still went a-s over t-t.

I agree, mine is supposedly non slip but it is not. I have bought something which looks like rubber mesh, it is a bit safer but I still take great care.

The memory foam mat on the tiles outside does not move.

We have a 'wet room' so the shower tray is under the tiles (non-slip Limestone) so no step up just a flat floor and we just have 2 narrow plain glass panels to prevent the toilet/ towel rail getting wet otherwise it is open. There is 'trap' which I lift out every week and rinse so hair etc does not block the pipes! Easy!
