Severe autism advice

I have a 5 year old granddaughter with severe autism. Non verbal etc.
her mum is struggling and I wanted to ask where do you go to get any help? She is willing to pay privately if necessary .
She has numerous problems, but her eating and particularly her lack of drinking is proving very difficult. She has had her checked at the hospital and the gp, but nobody offers any professional support or help.
She is at school in an autism unit, but terribly difficult to manage at home.
Any advice would be welcomed.

Am sure someone with experience of this will be along shortly but all I can offer is sympathy.From the tv programmes I ‘ve seen things are always very difficult at home for parents but there is a national autism society which parents can join which will offer strategies and the feeling of not being alone.

You may like to consider residential care at least for a few years. A member of our extended family who is non verbal has this facility during the week and returns home at weekends after his mother has recharged her batteries. Some local authorities will pay the cost of this.

What a difficult situation for your family.
If she attends an Autism Unit I would have thought they would be able to give the best advice. I worked alongside an Autism Outreach team from the local LA, who specifically supported parents and students. I realise these teams may not exist with today’s cuts.
Some of my students were also supported outside of the educational setting, by MENCAP.
