The 100 day cough!

I had it from just before Christmas. It's only just abated. At least 3 weeks!

I have been coughing since February. No respite and no solution!

Don’t ignore a persistent cough seek advice I did after months of coughing. I was diagnosed with asthma after the Walk-in centre referred me for tests.

I’m in my 4th week. I rang the GP last week. He said it sounds like a viral cough. If I still have it in 3 weeks I’m to attend the surgery. Or sooner if my symptoms worsen.

My DH has it too. About five weeks now, I think.

I have a winter cough every year and it lasts until February. It’s exhausting as it keeps me awake at night, but my GP has tried everything over the years and now we have come to accept it will eventually run its course.

I had it for almost 3 months, I had an XRay and a CT scan to make sure it was just a viral cough.

I had never heard of " the hundred day cough" until this post. I had a cold in early December lasting the usual 6 - 8 days but since then I have had a persistent cough. I certainly hope it doesn't last for another 70 days 😲! I have just had a chest x-ray ( policy in my area if the cough has lasted more than three weeks). I don't feel at all unwell it's just annoying and embarrassing.

I'm not unwell either, just coughing. I try to stifle it in bed as I don't like keeping my husband awake, even though we each have our own room. It's so annoying.

Mine started on 8th November really suddenly .
I'd been out to lunch and my throat felt a bit tickly when chatting and when I returned home it hit me like a sledgehammer .
I felt ghastly - boiling hot , coughing non stop and throwing up .
I was holding my ribcage crying .
I thought that I had pneumonia /pleurisy having had both before .
The extreme reaction abated and left me with a cough and a feeling of complete exhaustion and sometimes a headache ever since . I didn't enjoy Christmas nor New Year .
I do chores for an hour and then rest .
One of my friends has it .
She , like me has a compromised immune system .

Mine started beginning of December, just about gone now. Covid cough, I did the test. At its worst, throughout December it was pretty relentless.

DH and I have had the cough for about two months now.I would say we had a month of awful debilitating coughing which over the second month reduced to what is now an occasional cough.

Yes, once at the start of my cold symptoms and again at the beginning of the year. Both tests were negative.

I had the same and still feel exhausted months later. A friend actually had to be hospitalised with pneumonia following similar symptoms

It’s surprising how long some Coughs can hang around.

I had this 12 years ago when i was 54, and regular GPs said it is 'just the 100 day cough'. When I collapsed at work and went to see another GP, he was an Indian chap on a year's GP training. Whether that made him more conscious of not missing anything/or he wanted to make a good impression I don't know, but he sent off a blood sample. I got a call a few days later to say I had Whooping Cough. Whooping Cough is a notifiable disease, so goodness knows how many cases are not being reported if patients are told it is 'just the 100 day cough'.

My SIL has had a terrible cough for over a month her GP has referred her for a chest X-ray but she said so many people have this lingering cough and are being sent for chest X-rays that she may have to wait a few weeks.
Another friend started with this cough at the beginning of December she coughed so much she has fractured 3 ribs and is in agony. Nothing they can do for her ribs except painkillers and cough won’t go away.
I am keeping away from both of them.

Yes whooping cough is often missed and the cough lasts for ages. In fact I did read somewhere that the 100 day cough is another term for whooping cough. Could be wrong. Often am!!

Yes I also heard on a news article that people and some Doctors are dismissing this as a 100 days cough and is actually whooping cough which is bacterial infection and could be treated with antibiotics.

My cough got worse today so late morning I rang my doctor’s surgery. Got an afternoon appointment. She listened to my chest heard ‘slight crackles’, so prescribed amoxicillin for seven days instead of five and sent me to our hospital up the road - only 15 minute walk from the surgery - where I had a chest X-ray done at 4pm. Very efficient. I’m glad I went.

Mine started after an Asthma Exacerbation, however at no time did I have a fever or chills.
If you have a cough with any other symptoms then the chances are that there is an infection and you can be given antibiotics.

I think the 100 day cough is just that, coughing but no other symptoms.

Urmstongran, I'm envious, you actually got through to a doctors surgery and saw one the same day. Here you ring every morning or queue outside the surgery at 7.30 am, no matter your age, they just say ask someone else to do it for you, 8 times out of 10 all appointments have gone. By whom I would like to know. To see a doctor little or no chance. Other than that ring 111 or 999. I have been trying unsuccessfully to get to see a doctor for ages, cannot stand outside in all weather, our pharmacists are on their knees dealing with patients, they will be throwing the towel in soon. It's a post code lottery.

I requested an appointment on 1st November last year. After chasing it up I got an appointment last werk.

Two and a half months wait for an appointment must be a record.
