Arthritis pain in knee coming from hip

Tricky one. You will know more when you've seen the Consultant & maybe had more X rays and /or scan. I had severe OA in my right hip and a lot of pain in my right knee also, so assumed that I would probably need both hip and knee replacing. My consultant explained to me that we would start with replacing the hip joint as often, the knee pain is referred pain from the hip joint. He was absolutely correct: although my X rays showed the presence of OA in my knee, since my hip replacement I've had no pain in my knee whatsoever.

Our bodies are very good at compensating so I'd wait until I'd seen the consultant but definitely mention that your physio is concerned about the hip joint. fwiw I ride and had started to think I'd got a stiff hip but actually it's the hip flexors that are weak and exercises really helps me, the joint is actually pretty good for someone in their 70's. I don't know what treatment your physio is giving you but she should be able to test the joint and I believe a hip problem can affect your knee.

Same here.. I had knee pain for years, had injections, Arthroscope the works. Eventually a bright GP asked if anyone had checked my Hip..? No.. guess what? completely knackered arthritic Hip. All ref pain, got Total Hip Replacement pain instantly gone But the damaged was done. 6 years later I have just had Knee Replacement.
Now awaiting other Hip replacement due fingers crossed this summer, and my knee that side is playing up!

Can I put the cat among the pigeons and say sometimes the pain can radiate from the spine. A lot can depend on the nature of the pain, where it is and if you can feel it radiating down your leg.

X-ray done a couple of years ago showed OA of the knee. I haven’t done anything about it. Too scared of operations, due to my lung problems.

Could I ask, are the injections to the knee really painful. Ive just been diagnosed but read that the injections are excruciating. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a wimp.

I spent two years having my knee investigated and in the end, when I could no lo no we walk, it turned out I needed a new hip

I didn’t find a knee injection painful grannyben, uncomfortable for a few moments but definitely not painful.

My DH had quite a bit of pain alleviated when he was fitted with orthotic insoles. Sometimes the way our hips align is a bit out and stress is added to the knee or ankle joints.

I would wait and see what the consultant says. Hopefully you will be referred for xrays or scan.
