Gold crowns

If it was me, white ....

I had to have a gold crown removed recently- mine had been in place for over 50 years- they are supposed to last 10-15 years. I suppose you will have to weigh up the cost of white versus gold.

Hi travelsofar, I’ve got a couple of gold crowns. My lovely dentist of 40 years (I’m fearful of his retirement) said they would be stronger and given the choice between those or the cheaper option he would have gold. I trust him to be honest. I’m on Denplan so just had to pay for the lab work and the gold obviously but don’t remember the cost being too horrendous. They’ve not given me any problems, had them a few years now. Sorry can’t remember the exact cost.

I had a gold crown put in when D1 was about 18 months.
She was 45 last birthday

I had a crown fitted when DD was six months old, she will be 52 in March, I guess I have had my money's worth.

I had three in about 1975. They are still going strong. If they need replacing I will go for white replacements.

I had 5 gold crowns fitted 45 years ago, when I was pregnant with DS2, all free under the NHS .

They are doing fine, and are all towards the back of my mouth, so not normally seen by anyone else. ?

(I did tell DD that I would leave them to her in my will)

Those of us who had gold crowns fitted donkey's years ago appear to have had our money's worth. I do not understand why crowns fitted now will only last 10 -15 years. Mine are also at the rear of my mouth so cannot be seen,

?. Before I read the post content, I had thought it was about Gold Crowns, as in the monetary ones.

I would definitely choose white. I think they look much better.

My D has two gold fillings in her back teeth----she's had them for years.

The resident dentist (ret'd) says yes!

The cost shouldn't be much more and, as gold is softer than porcelain, they are more forgiving in the bite.

He has had 2 since dental school and they are still fine.

When I saw this post, I didn't think teeth!

In my opinion gold crowns are fine if the teeth don't show, but if they do show when you smile, I think they are ageing. Mine are all white, just in case.

I thought of gold crowns as worn by royalty, then gold crown coins. Teeth didn’t enter my head.

I had a crown fitted some years ago that was white at the front and metal at the back. Some weeks later I developed a cough which kept getting worse (never thought it had anything to do with the crown). The GP office did all sorts of checks including a chest x-ray. It was by some fluke some six months on that I had a thought to think about what was in the crown. To my horror I discovered that my crown was mainly nickel to which I am allergic. Much has happened since then and fortunately I am much better but it shows that whatever you have done, do not be afraid to ask exactly what is in whatever it is you have fitted.

DH's lab made a gold crown for a patient that didn't really fit properly. We kept it, had it polished and put on my charm bracelet! We were young and foolish then.

If dh had any that he had removed from a patient's mouth we used to save them up and periodically a man came to the surgery, weighed the gold and gave us cash.

I had a gold crown fitted when pregnant so free and I loved it.When my child was older he grabbed my chin and asked if I was chewing an earring! I liked the smoothness of it.

I had a gold crown fitted 46 years ago and it is still going strong and hasn't given me a bit of trouble. Fully recommended.
