Omeprazole

I was prescribed it last year to take alongside Naproxen but stomach pain and constipation meant I had to stop taking both of them.

I've been taking it for a couple of years and thankfully had no unwelcome side effects that I'm aware of. Then again, I have so many gastric problems anyway, I probably wouldn't notice if they did have an added effect.
I'm not happy about taking this drug long term, but whenever I've tried to do without, or cut it back (every other day instead of daily, for example), I've had a return of the frightening choking episodes that it was prescribed for in the first place. So I quite literally cannot do without it.

I find I need this after I have done a lot of bowls or gardening, because bending down does not do the hiatus hernia I have any good at all, so it is my fault if I suffer. I only take it when necessary and then just once in the morning and evening, which seems to help. One of the 'duty' doctors I saw at one time at our surgery was shocked when I said I took is as a regular thing, and suggested I only took in when necessary, which is what I do. I do not seem to have any side effects at all.

It has made a big difference to my laryngo-phryngeal reflux, along with Ranitidine and Gaviscon Advance. No side effects at all.

I took it for years with no ill effects and then it stopped being effective. GP put me on Lamsoprazole, but that tipped my digestive system on its head, so I am now on Ranitidine. So far so good.?

My Gastro Consultant prescribed it for Atrophic Gastritis so I've been taking daily for a while but now I'm having really bad bloating. Not sure if it's the Omeprazole or not so don't want to stop taking it as it does ease my stomach problem. My GP wasn't happy about me being on it permanently. I was on Lansoprazole before and that didn't do any good so switched. Annodomini, can I ask what dose you're on and do you take Ranitidine and Gaviscon as well?

I take 40mg of Omeprazole; 150mg of Ranitidine and Gaviscon as necessary, but essential last thing at night. All this was prescribed by an ENT consultant. The reflux had caused awful laryngitis and I still can't sing up the scale! Not that I was ever much of a singer. But I rarely lose my voice unless I really do talk too much!

I used to take Omeprazole but it gave be terrible stomach cramps and bloating. I was prescribed Pantoprazole which was much better.

I take it with my Naproxen and have had no problems with it.

That seems like an awful lot annodomini, I'm only on 20mg a day. I've been on it for about a year as my stomach condition is chronic. Interesting comment from Cathy04, I also get stomach cramps so may be worth checking it out. Thanks everyone, it seems to be prescribed for a wide range of conditions.

I take it with my Naproxen, too. No problems, although I did find that after taking it and the Naproxen, that I got horrid indigestion which lasted all day. I've resolved that problem by taking the tablets with a glass of milk.

Marelli I take my Omeprazole before my breakfast and then the Naproxen and BP med after I've eaten with a whole glass of water it seems to work for me.

I did try taking the Omeprazole that way, as well as the Naproxen, Tanith, but still ended up with indigestion. So much so, that I thought I'd try to do without taking the meds at all, and just rely on paracetamol and topical stuff like Pernaton etc. Didn't work, though .
However, I seem to have sussed it by taking with a glass if milk - which I really like. The calcium can't be doing any harm, either.

I need Omeprazole if I take Ibuprofen, which I try to avoid, to protect my stomach.
Recently went to Dr with stomach cramps and bloating and he told me to take the Omeprazole every day so this has confused me!

stopped taking it a couple of months ago (ibs) after reading the effects of long term use ie cancer and kidney disease! it was hard coming off them as I'd been on them for over 10years! best to cut down gradually and not go cold turkey like me...

my ibs is no where near as bad as it was since I stopped and I dont feel so lethargic either in all honesty I can say that I feel better by not taking them...I always have a bottle of gaviscon to hand if needed...

we all need a certain amount of acid in our stomach to help with food digestion so if your taking omerprazole to reduce the acid ....if it reduces it too much you are going to have difficulty digesting your food... I do think that they are dished out like sweets!

I take Omeprazole with Ibuprofen and co-codomol for osteoarthritis.

Something is making me pee all night. I get up about 5/ 6 times. Driving me mad ......I spend half the night on the loo peeing what seems like gallons. (Sorry to be so indelicate. ) Is it the Omeprazole?.

LullyDully you should mention it to your GP as Omeprazole can cause kidney problems.

I've just been prescribed 20mg of this to be taken once a day for 28 days for Oesophagitis. I take it first thing in the morning. If it doesn't clear up I've to go back to the GP. I had this 6 months ago so it seems to have come back. I hope it works this time as I don't want a tube down my throat! Thankfully I don't seem to have any side effects with the Omeprazole.

Too early to tell as I was prescribed it only 2 days ago. My complaint is the added colouring (E 104) which makes the tabs a bright yellow, Why do they do this?

Do we really need on Gransnet, links to websites that are obviously out to sell something? Surely we can do better than that.

Maybe they are selling something useful?
Surely we can decide for ourselves whether to look at links and whether to buy anything.

I was prescribed Lamprazole(? - I think - I threw the packet away) for a hiatus hernia, Barrets disease and reflux and it hit my stomach like a bullet. Now I'm on Omprazole and all is well. The doctor said the ingredients are exactly the same so I shouldn't feel any different. But I do. Perhaps it's the colouring!

I think it's horses for courses and you need to try different ones to get what suits.
