Help! sniffing Grandchild

IT could be allergic rhinitis Allergens such as house dust, animal dander, mould etc. A trip to the GP is worth considering. They can prescribe quite efficient nasal sprays although you sometimes have to trying several before finding the one that is right for you.

Could be an involuntary tic. My eight year old grandson does exaggerated blinking which is involuntary. He also has Asperger syndrome, and the specialist who sees him said it probably I'd Tourettes. I'm not saying this is what you grandaughter has, but it might be worth investigating.

She'll grow out of it, and then it will be something else. The joys of parenthood.

I think quite a few children develop strange behaviours
My oldest grandson used to suddenly make loud, weird noises
We seriously thought he may have Tourettes at one point!
He did stop it though, (eventually)
Meanwhile, my younger grandson licks his lips constantly; making his lips chap and his face sore!

Try to keep ignoring it is my advice.

post nasal drip ? trip to the Doctors might be best

Post nasal drip usually manifests itself at night when lying down and more likely to manifest as a nocturnal cough

I also think it's just a habit tanith but making her aware she is doing it is probably a good thing.My DGS was doing the licking the lips thing, and even trying to peel bits of skin off his lips ( a comfort thing, like hair pulling) but his Mother offered him a game that he wanted for the X Box if he could stop. In two weeks he had stopped, and he never re-started again.

I wonder if an antihistamine might help.

I will pass on all the advice to my daughter she'll make up her own mind but I am going to make granddaughter aware she is doing it then shut up about it

Never tried it but I ave heard that the rubber band technique can help stop a bad habit. She puts a rubber band on one wrist and snaps it instead of sniffing.

trisher the problem would be that she doesn't even know she's doing it most of the time but I know the rubber band thing does work I use it sometimes myself.

You could pass her a tissue each time she sniffs, saying "That's a nasty cold, it has lasted a long time". She will probably look puzzled if she doen't know she is doing it.

In Japan it is very bad manners to blow your nose in public, but OK to sniff!
