Pears in Calvados

I thought Calvados must be a place, I ve never heard of it !

My mother thought fruit with booze served with ice cream the best thing ever. She had a special bottle of liqueur that she poured over strawberries.

It is a département (county) in Normandy and an apple brandy. I would just serve them with ice-cream. The local speciality pudding is tergoule, a cinnamon flavoured rice pudding. I have never had it with pears though. You could just extract the pears and drink the Calva (but not too much). ?

I have a bottle of it from 1948, given to me by a neighbour and made by her father.

In Brittany, the neighbouring region, I've seen them wrapped in puff pastry or as fillings in crepes (pancakes). Both with a big blob of ice cream.

One of my mother’s star dishes was pears poached in red wine, but I don’t think I’ve ever had pears in Calvados. Sounds good.

Though I wouldn’t be putting Calvados in it. Calvados and I have a brief and very painful (for me) history. Suffice it to say the day after the night before came close to the day after I had the smallpox vaccine and seriously thought I was about to die....

I'm thinking there has to be a reason why calvados (with apples or pears) comes from the same area as those delicious soft French cheeses, so here's another suggestion ......
Toasted sourdough with a smooth layer of Camembert or Pont-L'Evèque, topped with the pears in calvados.
