Welsh Cakes

Mmmn can I come round ? I love welsh cakes, maybe I’ll make some myself haven’t done that for years.

Yes, dead easy to make! Even I can do it, using a Chapatti maker as a bakestone.

I despise the carby little buggers though. Straight to the hips!

I have my Grandma's griddle. She used it over the fire to make Welsh cakes. Lovely when hot with Welsh butter
We have always made them . A staple in our family .

Even easier is Shortbread, just butter, sugar and flour.
Use clean hands to knead it in a bowl and press it into a tin and bake. That's all.

¾ cup butter at room temperature
1/3 cup sugar
1½ cups plain flour
Tiny pinch of salt

Bake in medium oven until golden. Leave in tin for 5 mins after cooking but cut into fingers. Then turn out onto a rack.

My grandson loves making this, and licking his hands afterwards!

When you make Welsh cakes do you put any spice in? I don't usually.

If you don’t have a bakestone or a griddle, what do you cook them on? My best friend makes them but has a bakestone. DH is very fond of them.

mumofmadboys some recipes call for a tiny bit of ground nutmeg. They are nice with or without.

I use my Welsh mum's recipe to make Welsh cakes. It has a touch of mixed spice and the fats are half butter/half lard for that genuine taste.

Can we have the recipe for Welsh cakes please?

I do mine in a dry frying pan too, just flour, sugar, sultanas and milk we’ve always made them to that recipe I don’t really measure either.

Mumofbadboys I always put in a teaspoon of mixed spice and a good grating of nutmeg.

Ingredients

225g of self-raising flour, or 225g plain flour and 1 tsp baking powder
1 pinch of salt
100g of butter, or margarine, plus extra for cooking
50g of caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling
50g of currants
1 egg, beaten with 3 tbsp milk

Method

Mix the flour and salt together in a large bowl and rub in the margarine or butter. Add the sugar and currants and stir well

Pour the egg mixture in and mix until you have a stiff dough

Roll the dough out on a lightly floured board until 5mm (1/4 inch) thickness and stamp out rounds with a pastry/biscuit cutter

Heat the griddle over a medium heat until hot and grease with a little butter – the baking griddle should be well-greased, and then heated until a little water sprinkled on the surface skips about in balls, evaporating. A heavy cast iron frying pan makes a good substitute. Cook the cakes for about 3 to 4 minutes each side, until they are golden brown and have risen slightly

They sound like fried scones. Never heard if them before, I might try them.
My Northumbrian Grandma used to make girdle scones, more like pancakes.

No sorry - those were drop scones, I think.

Ooh, love Welsh cakes. But high fat so they wouldn't do my reflux any good though. ?

Welsh cakes, girdle scones and singing hinnies are all very similar.
I make singing hinnies in a dry, heavy bottomed frying pan on the hob.
I've just had my lunch, but now my mouth is watering. ?
