Rudeness towards Charlie Dimmock

I mostly agree. 95% or so. But I do think she allowed the media to play on her sexiness when she was first in the media spotlight, and as a result, is bound to be compared.

Although, having said that, Diane Abbott is slated for her appearance these days and never presented herself as political eye candy so...

I agree with the OP. I doubt anyone in their 50s (or whatever) would stand up to being compared to themselves in their 20s. I certainly would not. I wish now I had appreciated my looks when I was in my 20s.

The only thing I ll say about Charlie Dimmock is she played on her free boobs and flowing red hair when she started out so I suppose people see a big difference now if she had just played on her gardening skills in the beginning there wouldn’t be anything to talk about now (that doesn’t make it right though) The media is to blame for most things

Like most of us, she has aged and put on weight. Always well endowed, she probably needs more support in the bra area than she did 30 or so years ago.

You just don’t look the same in your 50’s, if that’s her age, as you did in your 20’s and 30’s.

Charlie got a lot of attention years ago when she was messy but credible, the media very often feature celebrities with eccentric styles.
Now to be blunt she is just a mess, would I go on screen looking like that, not in a million years.

I just think she is a breath of fresh air! She is knowledgeable and skilful in her chosen profession. I loved watching her on Garden Rescue, along with the two Rich brothers. I never give her appearance a thought, (but have always loved her hair).

Does it matter what she looks like? She is a gardener for heaven's sake. She's not likely to turn up with manicured talons and designer clothes. Just because she dares to weigh more than 8 stone, she is a target for the image police. Leave the poor woman alone.

I agree with you Katie. She’s trying to be the same as she was 30 odd years ago and it just doesn’t work any more. She might have looked sexy to some men back in the day but now she just looks messy, and dare I say grubby even for a gardener. Wish she’d get a decent bra and tie her hair back! My hair is just a bit shorter than hers but unkempt it isn’t, and there’s no way I could be gardening, which I do most days, without tying it up. She’s very good at what she does but I find her very irritating these days because she seems to delight in looking a mess. I will now duck before the bricks hit me.

Perhaps she has got to the stage where she realises that whatever you do with your appearance as a woman someone will have a view on it.

I garden for 2 other people besides keeping my own looking lovely.
All according to what I’m doing my hair will look good and, I have my nails done every 3 weeks.

Have you personal experience of living in less nitpicking, less privileged countries, BlueBelle?

I can’t help wondering, since I have lived in other countries/cultures where people were honestly much the same, and in fact often more keen to criticise if you happened to be
foreign.

I do notice that it’s popular on GN to assume that everything is always better/nicer outside the U.K.

But that's fine for you and of no business of mine but for me I would rather stick pins in my eyes than have my nails done three times a week. Perhaps she is the same.

Good for you Meryl. I fear my nails aren’t wonderful with the gardening but they are scrubbed, and my hair is clean and brushed too.

I haven’t seen any comments re Diane Abbott’s appearance gagajo. However, as many women in the public eye unfairly have their dress sense/appearance scrutinised constantly why should Abbott be treated any differently?

I just think Charlie always seems like a really nice person, and good at gardening. I do think it's a pity that such emphasis is placed on the way she looks.
