I’ve just read about yet another drowning tragedy on our beaches.
2 adults and a teenager dead, the younger child in ICU. All from the same family.
We, as a country, don’t appear to be adjusting in any way to our ever changing, hotter weather.
My question/suggestion is now, with more and more people potentially seeking to cool down in our sea, should we follow the example of other countries and set up life guards during the summers, stationed on our beaches, and put up notices in areas where there are strong riptides.
I grew up on the coast, as did my parents and our children. We all swam in open waters. But, far more importantly and crucial to safety, we learned at an early age about tides, how dangerous water is and how to swim.
It saddens me how many needless deaths we’ve had this year already and would love to hear others ideas about water safety.
I appreciate this would cost money and would have to be funded locally via councils.
The lifeguards, however, like our wonderful lifeboat services could be volunteers, the signage would be a one of cost, and the lifeguard training and perhaps small lifeguard huts would have to be funded.
Any ideas?
Struggling with estrangement from 2 adult children and dont know where to go from here.
