why do Wetherspoons employ these idiots?

Presumably doing what they were told to do (probably without being told context). That's if it's true and not just a rumour (what was the source, please?).
Man 'baffled' after Gosport pub refuses entry over poppy - BBC News share.google/Clcpb2XNL2qSGByy4
Oh dear, not that I ever go into a Wetherspoons but I wonder if this is a sign that even the dear poppy is now being hijacked by the far right. The poppy, for me, was always, and will always, be a symbol of anti-war in remembrance of all those around the world who lost their lives as a result of a completely unnecessary war. I would never remove my poppy if asked to do so.
Boycott the place! Name and shame them in the newspaper.
Wetherspoons normally sell poppies in their pubs. There is no ban on poppies in any of their establishments.
This was to do with a march taking place that day, which led to that particular pub closing at 5pm.
I think this must be a one off, they would never get any customers if true and there would be protests. They sell poppies in our Wetherspoons,so doubtful about the source of this.
I’ve seen, on fb, so not a reliable source by any means, a listing of retailers who for some reason are not allowing people to enter their shops wearing poppies or are not supporting the Poppy campaign.
Surely it cannot be the radical right? Why on earth would it? Surely veterans plus those supporting the Poppy and all its stands for are true patriots.
I simply think, of late, our entire world has simply gone completely bonkers! 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
Sounds very strange to me. Difficult to believe.
Some over zealous doorman and manager, both of little brain, inflaming a fractious situation.
The protests in Haslar Gosport are regarding the asylum seekers who recently headed that way.
Wetherspoons have made a statement that they sell poppies in their pubs and wearers are welcome.
Weatherspoons are back peddling furiously over this.
They should dish out a free drink to anyone entering their premises wearing a poppy.
As for the staff members responsible, maybe an enforced history lesson.
Cossy

The post i saw on Facebook was a joke 😃, it was stores like C&A that all closed years ago
Ah Ziggy That makes sense. Irony goes right my head sometimes these days, sometimes it’s somewhat hard to tell if it’s ironic, madness or sheer lunacy 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Have you read the link from BBC news?
It is self explanatory, no need for backpedaling from Wetherspoons

I hope they are not peddling anything whether they have come back or not.
Did you mean backpedalling ?
It was a one-off by a clueless member of staff.
Wetherspoons have since come out very strongly repudiating the fact that they have banned poppies, and have stated how much their pubs have raised by selling poppies.
More insanity
Why do they employ them, they’re cheap.

B&M Stores will not sell poppies. One year the woman on the till took a box but the manager apparently locked them in his office and refused to put them out.
Witzend

The numpty equated the RBL poppy with the badges etc that the local protestors were wearing and said they were a political statement.
Poppies have been being politicised. for decades.
I,ve never worn one nor did my father who served in the Navy in WW11 or any of my uncles who returned from the war .
They never spoke about the war ,in fact they were scathing about “ blowhards” who bragged about their service.
It’s past time to leave the past where it belongs, let the people who want to remember loved ones lost do it privately
That is a matter of opinion only.
I saw this on fb yesterday, the poster had posted a clear photo of the member if staff who looked very young and alarmed. There followed pages of aggressive and really threatening posts from all and sundry on the back of this.
I felt very concerned about the staff member’s safety, noticed there was a Raise the colours mention so checked it out.
My guess is that this was a large noisy group of young men who had been protesting about immigration wanting to drink and the staff member did not want trouble, as for the poppy it is not banned.
My point is we should all be careful about posting on the back of threads which encourage outrage.
