years ago making Christmas cakes mum had a little pot containing nutmegs. the little hard nutmeg was ready to grate carefully to use in cakes and rice pudding. i was just wondering if anyone still uses nutmeg now? can you still get those little nutmegs to grate? i know its nice in rice pudding so i wondered what it would be like for porridge etc

I used to use the nutmeg and grate but I don't use it often and use powdered now.

Absolutely. I always have some in the cupboard though there’s always a lot left when it’s time to sling them out and buy fresh. I last bought some whole nutmegs from Tesco.

Yes you can still buy whole nutmegs. I have a little nutmeg grater. I found that ready grated nutmeg dries up rather quickly and loses its flavour. I grate it onto bread and butter pudding, carrots and parsnips.

I have never tried it on porridge.

I have a pot with 2 nutmegs in. Have had them for ages. Do they go off? They still smell nutmeggy and pleasant when I grate them with a little grater. Next time I have rice pudding I will grate some on the top.

Poppysmum, Yes to all your questions! In south east Asia they grate the mace and roll it in sugar, it’s delicious.

I have a nutmeg mill that I use all the time. I always add it to savoury dishes as well ass sweet ones. Used it yesterday making a lasagne.

I also have whole nutmegs with a dinky little grater. I keep the nutmegs in a pretty fabric bag.
I use it in the Christmas cake and on rice pudding.

An essential ingredient of my mulled wine and Glühwein.

I use whole nutmegs. I have a little nutmeg grater with a nut storage space at one end. Freshly grated nutmeg has an aroma and flavour far beyong that ground stuff.

Secret spell for mushroom magic: if you're frying mushrooms for a classic British breakfast, or just mushrooms on toast, grate a little nutmeg in the pan.

Also I keep a few inches of ginger root wrapped in the freezer, take it out and quickly grate a little spoonful while it's still rock hard, bung it back in the freezer. Great for tea, cakes, curries etc.

Yes whole nutmeg. I have a mini nutmeg grater perfect. Personally I would rather have "fresh" Nutmeg than something that's been hanging around in jar for ages.

I'm a nutmeg user. I use it regularly with my little grater.

jusnoneed Fri 16-Oct-26 18:26:52

Have a jar of whole ones in my cupboard and a mini grater like the one butterandjam describes. Lovely on rice pud.

I love nutmeg, ever since I tasted it in rice pudding, my mother's not the hideous school stuff. I use it in recipes that recommend adding spice even if that spice isn't nutmeg. Like others I like a whole nutmeg.

I bought my nutmegs in Jamaica. They’ve lasted years and I use them for flavouring all sorts, including if course cake.

Nutmeg in small amounts is extremely beneficial to your health.
In large amounts it is dangerous .
I like a little nutmeg grated on top of an egg custard .
I also like the name!

eazybee Fri 16-Oct-26 18:39:01

I have a nutmeg in a little jar with a tiny grater and I use it if I make a rich fruit cake, and in bread sauce.

SueDonim Fri 16-Oct-26 18:48:15

I love nutmeg. I’ve got a mill for using with the whole nutmegs. They’re stored in the top of the mill and you pop the current one into the mill itself. I want home made rice pudding now.

Remember?confusedconfusedconfused
I have a little pot of whole nutmegs in the cupboard I always use freshly grated not powder.

poppysmum Fri 16-Oct-26 19:02:55

wow well its nice to know you can still get them plus they are a lot more versatile than i thought!
mums thick rice pud made in the Aga was wonderful and we used to always argue over who had the lovely thick skin on top!
does not seem any reason why you cannot use on porridge i have cinnamon so no reason why not

Treebee Fri 16-Oct-26 19:11:39

Yes, I use whole nutmegs too, with a dinky grater. Mainly on the top of rice pudding. I agree cinnamon on porridge is good, so why not try nutmeg.

TerriBull Fri 16-Oct-26 19:26:14

Nutneg is a warm and wonderful mix of exotic islands and old fashioned recipes that still resonate. Well that's how I think of it.

Calendargirl Fri 16-Oct-26 21:06:33

Love the smell of nutmeg, always reminds me of my mum’s egg custards,

I use them in egg custards, in white sauces…

They last for ages.
