Scarborough Visit

I have relatives who live in the area so I've been a few times, I love that part of the country.

So glad you enjoyed your visit which sounds delightful. I have never been to Scarborough.

Yes, I think Peasholm Park is a special place, it has a lovely atmosphere.

I couldn’t do it now sadly as it is hilly, I remember two levels but there was a funicular rail from one level to the other, does that still operate?

One of my favourite places NannyPT, scene of childhood holidays and I’m told was where I took my first steps. I met a cousin there in April this year and we had a lovely time remembering times and loved ones long gone. It makes me feel emotional just to think of it.

Are there any decent hotels in Scarborough,I should love to hear of one.
Any good recommendations?

It was closed at the end of August Utbb due to safety concerns. Hopefully it can be repaired as like you say it is very hilly.

Well..now this is home turf, tho I dont know the park. Born in Hull, we always holidayed on the East Coast, Filey, Flamborough, Scarborough, Ravenscar, Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby, Runswick bay...cliff walks, the secret cafe at Boggle Hole Youth Hostel....and I know the coastline and the North York Moors well.

In a week or so am going for a few days just north of Scarborough to get to the seaside. (it had better have at least some sun.....)

There were 5 Cliff lifts [Funiculars) in Scarborough, only 2 working until recently as the one at the Spa has been closed as too expensive to repair/update/make safe. There is now only the Central Tramway operational, well it was a few weeks ago. I love Scarborough, we park by the Italian Gardens and wind our way down to what was the old outdoor swimming pool, walk along the front/beach, past the Spa, hop on the Funicular and mooch around the Town stopping off for a bacon butty at our favourite cafe, back down along the front and spend a few 2p’s in the slots lol, then slowly, slowly walk back up and along the Esplanade, resting along the way as its all uphill back to the car. Glad you had such a lovely time as well.

I have very fond memories of Scarborough as a child. We would have a week in June (pit week), staying in a flat. Dad, bless him, couldn’t drive, but he had a friend who could who very kindly drove us there and back on one occasion (maybe more). I think other times we went by coach/train (I’m a bit vague on this as I was only very young). However, my memories are happy ones. I remember dad sitting on the beach with us and me and my brother having great fun “burying” him in the sand, whilst mum relaxed in a deck chair 😅.

Oh, “the can you see the sea yet” brings back more memories. Dad would promise my brother and I that the first one to spot the sea would get sixpence (old money😁). To be honest, though, dad made sure we both got sixpence 🤣.

What I recall is the huge, towering steam train at Paragon Station in Hull, waiting magically to take us to Scarborough. Oh the packing (Teddy must come) and then the Landlady, strict. No sand in the hall, perish the thought. But there was a slug in the salad on the first evening. Long idsucssionds about whether it should be mentioned.

I have fond memories of childhood visits to lovely Scarborough. How good it is to have a positive thread about the state of the country !

We got a taxi down to the front on the first night and the driver told us that the funicular had been condemned, it didn't sound as if it was repairable. We also went to The National Birds of Prey centre at Helmsley, it was wonderful to see some of the birds gliding about in the sky when we watched the display. It was a shame to see some black patches on the moors from the recent wildfires. Wyllow3 I do hope you have a lovely time when you go and it's warm enough for you. The sea was mostly like a millpond when we were there. I hope we will be able to go again as we really didn't have time to see everything we wanted to see. Whitby was nice and we went round the Captain Cook museum, luckily we were able to park nearby. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed North Yorkshire.

I hated the place the beach was obviously unmanaged. It was full of dog muck litter and broken glass. Not a safe environment for children to be running around.

Thats sad...try Filey just to the south, or Runswick Bay, to the North, for beaches. (go to the North End of Filey for the best fish and Chips ever) Robin Hoods Bay is historically amazing (smugglers tunnels going up under loads of houses)

As regards a place to stay, Filey is smaller and old style and a lovely clean beach, it's almost like it never changed much. And it has Filey Brigg, to walk out to sea at low tide near those fish and chips. High tide, a nice prom all the way along.

I think that a problem with Scarborough is that it's a biggish place, it isnt all touristy, and there are folks there that don't care enough, some deterioration.

NannyPT if you can get as far as Staithes northwards, its an amazing old fishing port, truly the real thing, and has lots of artists settled there now.

I think our promises to the children where in ice-cream but it was a tradition carried on from there Dad's childhood and I have a feeling his family may have been more competitive(smile).

The Helaina overlooks the North Beach. We've stayed there and found it comfortable and friendly, and the breakfast is good. (I am not related to the proprietors!)

The Stephen Joseph theatre is worth a visit.

We went to Scarborough twice when I was a child and then once after I married and had children. I loved Scarborough. It had everything that I expected and more. I think it went downhill a bit in the 90s. Sadly I doubt I will be back now

As a child, we never went to Scarborough as it was nearer for us to go to Cleethorpes, Skegness or Mablethorpe - none of which I like and still don’t. When DH left the Army and we bought a house here in South Yorkshire we had day trips to Scarborough and stayed there once for a week in a lovely B&B. We preferred North Bay to South Bay which is a bit ‘tacky’ and from there you could access the Cleveland Way, which is good for walking, and other very pretty coastal villages, as Willow said.

The last time I was there was the year before last, just for the day while I was staying staying further down the coast at Hunmanby Gap with DD and the menfolk. DH had a bit of a love affair with Filey, so that was as far as he was prepared to go, latterly.
