Watching the News tonight I was struck by the number of hand gestures accompanying what some of the reporters and interviewees were saying.
Does it enhance or emphasise what you are saying? How much do gestures matter or do they distract?
Young adults seem to rely on gestures more than I remember in the past, at least in English. It used to be a cliché that if you tied a Frenchman’s hands behind his back you rendered him mute!
So are you aware of using your hands or do see it as unnecessary flapping about?
It has certainly made me more aware of my own hands -and resolve to try to keep them by my sides!
"Old fashioned" expressions that young people have never heard.
