Plenty of ways to spend your holiday money in UK.
Plenty of lovely places to go.

BlueBelle I can't even contemplate holidays this year even in the UK, but that's me. My DH would be on the next EasyJet flight if it wasn't for me! I'm just glad to get about a little bit more.

Some people had their trips booked long before CV and couldn’t get their money back, so felt they needed to use it or lose it.

Others have done their own risk assessment and decided it was safe to go away.

Unless the govt tells us not to go on holiday, people aren’t doing anything wrong.

And no, I haven’t been away except to help my daughter move to England, which was hardly a holiday.

Totally agree BlueBelle but it seems that some people are hell bent on having their 2 weeks in the sun, global pandemic or not. Sitting on a plane or walking on a beach with a mask on is not my idea of a holiday.

I did have 6 days in France the first week of August with my family self catering in a place we know well. We did not eat in restaurants and we were back well before quarantine was announced and were in a tiny non touristy place anyway. We drove there ( and ferry ) . The ferry had much less people on it than usual and you could have plenty of space between you and others. We had cancelled the same holiday in May and had rebooked. None of us have any desire to fly and haven’t for several years .

I expect that a lot of people have been put off flying anywhere this year. Still, I believe that holiday travel is only a small proportion of airline income generally.

I realise some people may lose their money things like that are the luck of the game and may happen most people should’ve able to claim money back if they booked through a bone fide agent
Today there is a plane load of people (is it Flybe? I only caught the tail end) who have to quarantine and have some active cases onboard and I just don’t understand why people are so selfish and just can’t manage one year without their sun sand and sangria

It was the TUI Zante to Cardiff flight BlueBelle. On BBC news a lady who was on the flight said a lot of passengers took their masks off on the plane and we’re walking up and down the aisles without them too. Cabin crew did not say anything and TUI have now launched an investigation.

So you’re saying that someone who makes a different decision from you has no sense, Bluebell? To me, it simply means they’ve made a different decision.

There seems to be something amiss about the Zante flight in the news, from what we’ve heard so far, but it doesn’t mean no holiday makers are being sensible.

There was an interesting interview with a relevant scientist on R4 this afternoon. He said that the air in even old-fashioned aircraft is changed very frequently and that transmission of virus along the length of a plane is unlikely, because of the direction of air flow in the air exchange system. He said that the person you are most at risk from is someone sitting next to you or a sneeze from the person in the row behind - but presumably if proper social distancing is in place, there simply should not be someone sitting in the row behind.

It would make sense for people from the same family to be seated together in their bubble; and the next bubble to be seated further away; rather than individual spacing.

But, having said all that, I see no reason to take that risk at present. Lots of beautiful places in UK that could be visited in one's own car and in self-catering accommodation.

If an action doesn’t make sense, then surely the person taking the action is the one responsible for not being sensible. They didn’t go on holiday because an outside force wasn’t sensible.

Although I wouldn’t go I do understand why others do.
As others have mentioned, some travellers may have looked forward to and planned this break for a long time. They would lose money if the government haven’t forbidden travel to the area they are going to.
Most reasonable people would assume that the airlines and airports have taken the necessary safeguarding procedures. That isn’t always the case unfortunately.
Where they made their big mistake was in presuming that other travellers would behave in a safe way. So many of them don’t.

We booked our flight to Malaga for the end of this month last year. We are not going, even though I am very disappointed it is not worth the risk. If Jet2 are flying there I imagine we will lose our money, but our health is more important.

We had a river cruise booked for August, but way back in April made the decision to transfer our booking to next year because we didn’t want to fly in the current climate. We have had a break in this country and are due to visit family in Cornwall in a couple of weeks time. No regrets!

Well after watching last night’s news on the Tui flight and infection spread by returning holiday makers from a Greece I’d be very wary of getting on a plane despite what some ‘relevant’ (to what discipline?) scientist had to say.

I don’t want to go on holiday abroad, but I do want to see DS and the family in the USA.

And it’s not that easy to get money back for cancelled flights. We are still waiting for a refund for the flights we had booked for April.

There are now 16 people from the Tui flight have CV
7 had it on the actual flight so passed it to at least 9 other people who then travelled back to their homes possibly stopping for a wee or coffee or seeing relatives before they knew they were positive
I just think this is one of the quickest ways the virus will travel and continue travelling

We flew out here to Malaga at the beginning of March. I don’t want to fly back (too scared). We walk everywhere here - haven’t been in a taxi, bus or train in the last six months.

I know I’ll have to get on a plane at some stage but when? All these spikes of Covid worry me. This virus doesn’t seem to be going anywhere fast.

I can only hope that the rise in cases is due to more testing? I’ve heard people don’t even know they e got it until they’re tested! That doesn’t sound too scary ...

Is there any social distancing on a plane? Maybe someone who has been on a flight can clarify this. We should have been visiting DS1 in USA in July. Hopefully we will get there next year. No intention of travelling far apart from that.

I didnt know that much about the innards of a plane but I listened to PM on radio 4 yesterday talking about the air filtration systems being very good indeed.

Seems though that procedures lapsed. Which although not good is understandable as cabiin crew were stretched too far.

Paw and I had a week in Ludlow in 2011 and I managed to snatch 4 days on Gotland in Sweden in 2017 visiting DD, both of which were lovely.
Sometimes you just have to cut your coat according to your cloth don’t you?
Fretting about lost deposits or lost holidays gets you nowhere -and if it’s not possible, it’s not possible!

We are having a few days’ holiday Norfolk in October and cancelled our holiday to Norway which should have been a fortnight ago. Can’t even contemplate the thought of flying until at least next year or until the situation changes significantly &/or a vaccine shows to be effective. Would much rather be safe than sorry. I do feel for people who have family abroad who they obviously would really love to see - it must be very difficult and heartbreaking for them if they decide not to fly at the present time.
