40th wedding anniversary gift

DH and I have been invited to go to dinner for our friends 40th wedding anniversary. They had planned to go to New York but he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and is not well enough to go. What on earth can I get as a gift? They are not short of money but I want to get a gift for my friend to keep after its all over. He is not well enough for days out so limited with what he can do. Anyone any idea's?

I was in a similar position to your friend, a wedding anniversary when my husband had a few weeks to live.

Personally I wouldn’t have wanted anything to keep to remind me of that time, but everyone is different in that respect.

What I did appreciate was a promise to have a week away with me by the sea, when it was all over. It made me feel that I wasn’t going to be entirely alone.

But he is still alive so I think it must still be a joint present.

Very difficult. Especially at the moment.

A rose or shrub in a pot? I’m just looking at a rhododendron the Bodach and I got for our 40th.
