Paint or wallpaper

After succumbing to the ‘wallpaper on a feature wall’ fad and then finding myself trying to remove the horrible stuff a few years later when it was no longer fashionable I’m going with paint - every time.

I know exactly what you mean

Depends what you live in.

I had a 60s bungalow and papered one feature wall in living area. Loved it.

This wouldn't work where I live now. Small 1860s stone cottage. Walls not even plastered.

Still like the looks of patterned wall in a modern surrounding.

Paint every time! Much easier to change.

Just seen your post but I'd already done mine.

I've never been a fan of fads. I still like a feature wall with paper but it needs to fit the surroundings.

Not a fan of a whole room in a patterned paper.

I removed my feature wall paper three times to replace it. Steamer worked every time.

OTHER than hand painted wallpaper, which I like very occasionally. I quite like chinoiserie wallpaper although probably wouldn't have it in my house.

I'd have paint every time if it was left up to me. My husband likes the feature wall papered. I've only let him do it in the spare bedroom and the dining room.

Paint every time. When I bought my present house it was only 8 years old and thankfully had only been painted. So much easier and I think cheaper, to change.

paint mostly, but our old walls need a lot of help, so certain parts have to be wallpaper on top of lining paper.
soft sheen sort of emulsion means it's wipeable, matt doesn't seem to work that way.

Plain paint, every time even if it has to be on lining paper to hide a less-than-perfect plaster job.

Only once did I give in to the feature wall fad, in a huge, high-ceilinged room that I thought could take one wall covered in a large gold & brown floral design.

I was totally wrong about that and spent the next umpteen years feeling oppressed by those hideous flowers. I still have occasional nightmares about them.

It depends on the circumstances. I cannot see how anyone can come to any conclusion unless they have an implacable hate of either paint or wallpaper and would never use it, no matter what the circumstances. Which is rather like cutting off your nose to spite your face

Paint except on the end wall of my long, narrow en suite, which I love.

When I bought this house 6 months ago, every wall, in every room, was covered in a very thick heavy blown vinyl. And then painted in God knows how many coats of paint and those awful 1980s dado wallpaper strips near the ceilings. I hated it and decided to strip it all off with a steamer. Even as the paper was easing off the walls, I could hear chunks of 1970s plaster falling off the walls. I ended up having the whole house replastered and skimmed. There is no way that wallpaper is going back up whilst I live here! Paint in a water based emulsion every time. So much easier to clean and paint over.

Depends on the paper. We have in the past papered all the walls in a room, I wouldn't do that again but I do like a subtle or two toned patterned feature wall although we don't have any at present. We do have painted feature walls in the through lounge/diner and our bedroom.

It’s all a matter of personal taste influenced by fashion trends really.
The main thing is to have what pleases you.

Another vote for paint - preferably white!

Apparently wallpaper is the way to go. We have dreadful walls ,so a subtle wallpaper does look good. I also like to experiment. No plain white or magnolia here. Would be like living in a hospital ward

I had all white walls in my last home. Oh wasn't over enamoured with it but went with the flow ?
We compromised in this place but I got as near to white as I could ?

My 'off white walls are a perfect back drop for my love of pictures and mirrors, rugs and masks from all over the world.
Not one bit like a hospital ward. It's imagination.
