Seaside Treats

I loved a toffee apple I didn’t have it often as it was a big treat but I loved them often accompanied with a few “goes” on the fair

Cockles in a tiny pot, vinegar and well peppered with a wooden fork thingy to eat them with. Best ones ever were from Brixham, probably still are.

I loved an ice cream cornet with a flake, (or a 99).
I was never keen on sticks of rock.

I remember going to a rock factory in Great Yarmouth to watch it being made . I used to think that I would love to get my hands on it when it was still all gooey and soft. I hated to hard stuff .

I also remember feeling dead grown up having Lemon and Lime in the Winter Gardens.

Gillybob We visit Great Yarmouth often. The rock factory is still going strong but the winter gardens are a sorry sight now. I think that the town just can't afford to restore them, so they have been abandoned.

As a special treat - straight to the ice cream parlour for a knickerbocker glory

A bucket and spade was my biggest treat----I knew I'd arrived at the seaside. Wasn't keen on the Punch and Judy shows though or the donkeys.

Oh that’s such a shame Ilovecheese . I have such happy memories of our visits there and would love to go back . I remember we always saw whoever was doing the summer season there and I loved the Snails ride at the fairground . I also recall my sister and I having our photos taken with little monkeys wearing clothes which Seems a bit cruel now .

we didn't go on that many holidays as my family was quite poor, but whenever we did manage to go it was magical.

Loved a new bucket and spade, ice cream and a candy floss.

Most of all I loved the smell of the seaside, the sound of the waves and even the screeching of the gulls

When we went on holiday, the caravan park in Fife had a vending machine which sold triangular cartons of ‘ ice cold’ milk ( 3d I think), and I just loved them! When we graduated to St Annes I looked forward to tinned Heinz chicken or tomato soup at lunchtime with the very thin sliced bread we couldn’t get in Scotland! The ‘iced drinks’ ( now called ice cream floats I believe) were also a treat.

A wafer to me was a slice of vanilla ice cream from a block, remember those? sandwiched between two wafers. They were OHs favourite way to eat ice cream he used to buy one of those long blocks from Tesco and a packet of wafers and he was a happy bunny.

Yes Great Yarmouth is going downhill now sadly. The big stores have pulled out and its not popular as a holiday destination any more. This seems to be the fate of a lot of coastal towns.
I lived in Bridlington as a child and our treat was to have the place to ourselves after all the visitors had gone. We didn't understand about the economy etc.

A bottle of pop with a straw. For some reason we were only ever allowed to drink through a straw at the seaside.

We lived on the East coast but went over to Blackpool and Morecambe for our holidays. So many memories. I remember feeling so posh getting served a three course meal at the B & B, even though the starter was always fruit juice or packet soup and the pudding was icecream or a sliver of shop bought apple pie!

Back at home I loved the crab sandwiches and pots of mussels and cockles (sorry, Nannylovesshopping, but Whitby definitely had the best ) and at Redcar Pacitto's legendary lemon tops, with their knickerbocker glory and milky coffee as an occasional sit in treat.

I remember as a children we were taken to Tynemouth and Cullercoats beaches, taking sandwiches and then buying 99s. As teenagers we would go to the Spanish City fairground in Whitley Bay.
We used to have summer holidays in Donegal where we often had the beaches to ourselves. We'd gather driftwood, Dad would light a fire and we'd cook lunch (sausages, toasted breadbuns and the like) there on the sand. It always tasted great but we would be prosecuted if we did it now!

Oh yes Maggiemaybe Cromer crab salad or sandwiches, the best.

I remember staying in the same B&B every time we visited Great Yarmouth and couldn't wait for dinner time which as Maggiemaybe said up thread was always 3 courses including a choice of soup or fruit juice for starter and treat of treats, Artic Roll for pudding

I never had a holiday or saw the sea as a child. I did love toffee apples though. A lady down the road user to sell them for a penny.

I can remember going to the same B & B in Eastbourne with my Grans, loved having time with both of them together.

As Children, we always went for a weeks holiday, usually different places, every year.
My special holiday treat was a Banana Split and my Brothers was a Knickerbocker Glory, it didn’t matter where we were, we always got to have our treat.

A block of vanilla ice cream in a glass of cream soda. Wow. The way it used to fizz. Had me quite captivated.

Actually, after a day on a windswept beach in Blackpool (it was always windswept!) ... I used to look forward to real fish and chips from the local chippy.
Served in newspaper of course, and lots of salt and vinegar added.

Kelly’s ice cream cornet with a dollop of clotted cream bought from the ice cream van on Polzeath beach.

The vans are still there, but no clotted cream and the ice cream recipe is different, not so delicious, I guess because the milk was treated differently back then. Always had a thick yellow amount of cream at the top.
