I agree and I do try to do that gonegirl but it’s easy to get caught out.
I quoted something this morning on the BBC Licence thread & forgot to preview.
I’d used the ^ things to italicise it but had also forgotten that they don’t work if what you are quoting has been split up into paragraphs.

Sometimes I do it "like this", but no one notices it.

I put posters' names in bold and quotes in "quotation marks". Occasionally also use bold to emphasise a point rather than shouty capitals.

If I quote something which someone else who is not on GN said, I try to use " "

It doesn't always work though as sometimes spaces appear where they shouldn't

If I'm quoting another poster, I always italicise like this (Don't most people on here do this ? - I kind of thought it was 'the rule' ?☺️), but yes, you do have to be careful if the quote includes paragraphs or unnoticed spaces. Which is why I always preview if I'm using any sort of text formatting.

If I'm quoting something from somewhere else, though, I'm inclined to use "speech marks" or even "italicise and use speech marks"

I agree with you Gonegirl. Italics always stand out, but quotation marks are not so noticeable on their own.
