Holiday advice please-Vienna.

I spent a week there for Eurovision (blush)

The centre of the city is very grand with vast Imperial buildings and is the tourist hub with the usual tourist cafes and horse rides etc.

Venture over the river for much cheaper hotel rates and genuine eating places. Mostly meat and dumplings. vegetables are in short supply with any meal, except for sauerkraut and white asparagus.

The highlights for me were the Danube tower which revolved while I had coffee and cake and the Kunst Haus museum which has to be seen to be believed!

The transport within the city and to the outskirts is very good though I was almost killed a number of times by not being able to work out where the safe space was between the train tracks!

I haven’t been to Vienna for twenty years, but I loved it the couple of times I did go. It’s probably changed a bit. I went with a friend, not a package holiday or anything. We just booked flights and hotels ourselves. We were keen on the classical music associations - Mozart, Mahler, Schubert and many others had close associations with Vienna. We went to concerts at the Musikverein (where the televised New Year’s Day concert comes from) and to the opera.

Food we found rather heavy if we stuck to Austrian menus. I remember one meal that had cream in every course - from the soup to the pudding. We finished up sticking mostly to Wienerschnitzel - which is often made with chicken rather than veal - and Apfelstrudel. We ate in the hotel or at the cheapish Wienerwald restaurant.

We had a lovely coach excursion to the Vienna woods one day.

We went in autumn. The weather can be very hot and humid in summer and very cold in winter.

Oh, the Wienerwald restaurants have turned into fast food places, apparently. I’m out of date.

Oh, also, men dressed up like Mozart will try to sell you cut price tickets to Golden Hall or other concert venues. They have badges and look official. Do not buy!!!

Go to the venue. Or maybe online, I don’t know about that. The concert in Golden Hall was wonderful.

Five of us had a short trip to Vienna last autumn. We stayed in an airbnb apartment on the 23rd floor of a modern high rise block on the southern outskirts of the city which had fabulous views and a swimming pool on the roof.

We went everywhere on public transport - tram, bus and underground trains which were fantastic and very easy to use.

The two highlights of our trip were a Mozart concert at the Concert Hall and an all day boat trip up the Wachau Valley.

I loved Vienna. We went by Hydrafoil down the Danube from Budapest - brilliant! We saw the Vienna Boys Choir, Spanish Riding School (dancing horses) and went to the fun fair for a ride on the the famous ferris wheel from 39 steps. Lots of lovely Austrian cheesecake, coffee and cold beer!

My husband doesn't fly and we went to Budapest and returned from Vienna by train. We arranged train tickets and tickets for all the events ourselves from England and booked our own hotels. Sorry can't remember the names
