When I was young, this was the time we always got new clothing: socks underwear, summer dresses, coat and so on.
My grandad used to put a threepenny bit ("for spice") in each garment with a pocket.
It was a far more important time than Easter.
Just after the war, the tradition of the Whit Walk was still kept up in the Bradford area, so we walked behind a brass band, showing off our new clothes and, if we were lucky, collecting more pennies for our pockets from local housewives and spectators. 
Many people wore all white for that.
