Meghan and those bananas

What do you grans think of the Duchess of Sussex’s messages she wrote on Friday on a visit to Bristol? She and Harry were visiting a small charity, One25, that helps 150 or so street sex workers by running services from a fully-equipped truck offering food, first aid, warm clothing, condoms, safety alarms and a place to talk.

She asked for a felt tip pen and wrote ‘inspirational’ messages on some of the bananas such as ‘You are Strong’ and ‘You are Brave’.

I thought it was inappropriate and stupid.

not another thread disparaging Meghan!

MissAdventure Mon 04-Feb-19 19:37:18

Her massage to me would be "this is going to give you heartburn".

MissAdventure Mon 04-Feb-19 19:37:43

Ahh! Message! blush

EllanVannin Mon 04-Feb-19 19:38:47

I'd have chosen something other than a banana to write on-----given the cause !

sodapop Mon 04-Feb-19 19:40:38

No Meghan bashing from me Jalima however I did think it was a patronising thing to do and a bit 'celeb'

Jalima1108 Mon 04-Feb-19 19:40:59

Please make mine an under-ripe banana!
'Enjoy' could be a good message.

I’m beginning to feel I’m camp Meghan. This surprises me but Im fed up with Meghan bashing. She was asked to write messages for sex workers, on bananas. I can’t tell you have relieved I am that was never part of my working life. I fear I’d have written sonething unacceptable, Luke ‘get out, be a window cleaner, anything but sex work, it’s bad for the soul”

wildswan16 Mon 04-Feb-19 19:48:28

I didn't find it patronising. It was a little message to the recipient - and I hope it made them smile. Nobody tried to say it was going to make a difference to their lives. The charity offers practical help to these girls and if I was one of them I would be grateful for the help of the charity and the Duchess's interest (which I am sure goes a lot further than what was shown).

Jalima1108 Mon 04-Feb-19 19:55:00

Im fed up with Meghan bashing.

Me too

Now I'll be accused of being a sycophantic ardent Royalist grin

merlotgran Mon 04-Feb-19 19:55:35

It isn't Meghan bashing to say something negative about her decision to write on bananas. Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

As some are saying on Mumsnet, It's the fruit of 'nudge nudge, wink wink' jokes so may be seen by some as inappropriate.

merlotgran Mon 04-Feb-19 19:57:05

Some think it's nice and some don't.

Maybe we should hold a referendum.

Beau Mon 04-Feb-19 20:40:03

She wasn't asked though - I read that it was her idea, having seen some celeb write 'motivational' words on bananas in the US. I agree it was in very bad taste and completely inappropriate for a member of the Royal Family to indulge in such nonsense.

Anniebach Mon 04-Feb-19 20:50:44

It isn’t Megan bashing, just agreeing or disagreeing on writing what she did on the bananas , I thought it patronising, so many sex workers have serious problems , if a sex worker because your broke , on drugs, in control of a pimp who wants to be told ‘you are strong ‘ or ‘you are brave’

One of the girls has spoken out and is rather angry, said more hrlp was needed not a message on a banana

merlotgran Mon 04-Feb-19 21:07:27

I think she has a thing about suggestive bananas.

BlueBelle Mon 04-Feb-19 21:10:09

Well it might not seem Meghan bashing to you Anniebach but it really is damed if you don’t, damed if you do she can’t breath for somebody having to contribute to her doing it the wrong way
You know what if it had been the wonderful Princess Di done it she would have practically got a sainthood

moggie57 Mon 04-Feb-19 21:11:15

I thought it was bad taste. (no pun) but they do it in usa.. to make people feel they are valued...bit suggestive too.

merlotgran Mon 04-Feb-19 21:15:13

It's not Meghan bashing, BlueBelle. Any royal or celebrity making what seems like a rather self indulgent gesture will invite comments.

She might do something tomorrow that I will applaud....Who knows?

My opinion, that's all

lemongrove Mon 04-Feb-19 21:19:03

I think she is into all the motivational stuff, must say I did think it a bit weird to be writing things like ‘You are brave’
On a lunch pack banana given out to street sex workers, and think although it was done for the right reasons ( after all, there was nothing in it for her) prostitution in the UK is neither strong nor brave.Well meaning but a bit flaky.

Anniebach Mon 04-Feb-19 21:20:09

BlueBell, Diana wouldn’t have done it , she would have accidentally been caught by cameras as she made a secret visit to meet the sex workers .

No publicity for Camilla who supports battered women charities and does sit and talk to the women .

lemongrove Mon 04-Feb-19 21:52:40

merlot ! What are those bananas getting up to? grin
???? here are some bananas stripping off.

lemongrove Mon 04-Feb-19 21:53:13

Ready and ripe for some action!

Anja Mon 04-Feb-19 22:32:26

Oh for heavens sake get a grip OP! It’s good fun writing in bananas, try it sometimes....perhaps when you’re out volunteering or doing some charity work.

Urmstongran Mon 04-Feb-19 22:44:12

‘Get a grip’ ??
That seems a mean comment Anja. It was in the news.
And why the snide comment about me volunteering or doing some charity work?
You don’t know me or anything about me.
Jeez.

Jalima1108 Mon 04-Feb-19 23:15:05

lemongrove thanks, yum, they look a lot better than mine!
