My DD ( now aged 28 ) and I have always had a rather prickly relationship. Her father died when she was 2 years old. A few years later I remarried, then had our DS (now aged 21). I have clinical depression and have had it off and on since my father died suddenly when DD was 6 months old. My late husband was ill with cancer for 18 months before he died, diagnosed a few months after my dad died. All of this happened when DD was very young and she will have suffered from a lack of attention - she had to go to full time nursery as I had to become the breadwinner and look after my ill husband.
My 2nd husband has always treated DD as his daughter but she feels that her brother is the golden boy and she has been sidelined. She is married and has a son, aged 18 months, gorgeous boy of course, adored grandson. A few weeks ago she popped in to our house to collect something, left GS at my Mum's house a few minutes away. I was feeling rough, lying on the sofa. She asked if she should bring GS round to play, I said I'd rather not as I felt ropey. Since then she has blanked me, not replied to messages, not acknowledging a gift that I sent for him, no photos on social media, no contact at all. My Mother told me yesterday that DD is upset with me because I 'didn't want to see GS', and that she feels excluded from the family. She feels, according to my mum, that the reason that I felt poorly was that I was overtired from doing something for DS's girlfriend, and I've spent my time doing that to the exclusion of her and my GS. I had no idea why she was blanking us, thought maybe she feels that DS has had more money than he should as he is still a student and has started to rent a house with his girlfriend and needed stuff for that. DD is away on holiday for a further week. My mum and I were both crying yesterday over this. I always back off from confrontation with DD as she knows how to upset me and I'm not strong enough to deal with her. My mum always takes DD's side. I haven't told my husband of the conversation with my mum yesterday but he knows about the blanking of us. I'm fed up with DD's attitude towards us - she has been very rude and difficult. I don't know how to deal with her.
