Although all the press are indulging in hyperbole about the weather we are currently experiencing, those of us who were around 55 years ago, know what a Big Freeze is really like. I recommend the documentary I watched last night on BBC4, in which they showed impressive footage of winter 1963. Watch it on i-Player while you are hibernating and thank your lucky stars for the central heating, insulation and double glazing which, in 1963 were a decade or so in the future.

Aah! I could definitely stamp and shout at the moment!

. In Linlithgow there was (is?) a steep brae up to the station. Few cars could manage it, but my young sister, who was at school in Edinburgh, and I drove the family's mini which took that brae with ease, as the mini was, at the time, the only car with front wheel drive. It made out commute a great deal easier. Railway platforms ar the coldest places!
