A disaster for Mid Wales

A fire has caused £250,000 of damage to vehicles, medical equipment and clothing at The Mountain Rescue Centre depot in Dowlais, they cover the highest peaks of the Brecon Beacons. 130 call outs this year and they raise all their own funding. With holidays in December and Pen y fan being a big draw to many from around England and Wales this is really serious. The team are to attend call outs in their own cars but no trucks or ambulances for mountain rescues. Just hope idiots will not attempt climbing the mountains ill equipped as happens every winter
a lot of fund raising to be done

Do you have a link for donations? My family risked their lives n the lifeboats. As bit different I know but the same in other ways...

A lot of walkers really do not regard our relatively little mountains as serious hazards. We can get very bitter weather even on lower hills.

We once set off up Skiddaw on a lovely spring day in the valley. We went to walk up it but half way up the wind was so strong and we could barely stand up. We made a rapid retreat.

What a shame. Sorry to hear about this fire. It's such a worthy cause I hope that all and any climbers and hill walkers feel a responsibility to contribute to restocking the equipment.

Thank you grannyactivist,

The mountain range has taken the lives of soldiers , they are beautiful but are also dangerous

Anniebach they have a Facebook page you can follow, which I do. You get details of rescues they do, all their marvellous work.

I think they do marvellous work. People come from all the surrounding areas to climb Pen y fan.

That's terrible, Annie. It takes me back to our walking days, not so much in Wales, but we saw and heard so much about the mountain rescue teams and their very dangerous work.

Sparkly, they are indispensable, even with the loss in the fire they are turning out in their own vehicles . My husband use to be in the team, long time ago. Pen y fan draws people from around the country, so beautiful but can be so treacherous. And it's flipping snowed up again today. Here is a peep for you, and yes I have done all the routes ?
