Silly gifts (makes a change from egg-slicers!)

Okay, endeavouring to think of something lighthearted and with the scope for devilment that we love, I was reminded today that although it is not yet September, some people (me included) have begun Christmas shopping. And this led me on to thinking about 'silly' gifts.

In our family we have stockings and year on year we try to think of one silly thing to include. I have long been expecting to receive some voltarol (or similar such elixir ) as I moan about my kneecaps when I am playing with DGS on the floor and for this year I am severely tempted to buy DH some 'Just for Men' as he is now more 'gringer than ginger'.

Last year there was a very long thin tube in my stocking which turned out to be 100 tea-light candles stacked up -not a 'funny' , but a nice surprise.

Do you give 'silly gifts' and if so, which have been the best?

lemongrove Tue 29-Aug-17 21:30:54

No, but I do like the idea. It's never too early to start preparing for Christmas ? So will give this some thought.
Actually, Voltarol would be a good gift for me, and not silly at all, a faux fur thong would be a good silly gift for me though, as I would have to wear it as a headband.?
For DH an egg cup, as he never eats boiled eggs.

One of the nurses where I used to work was given a bag of Doritos and a flats tube in her secret santa present. We all understood why. wink

A flatus tube. My phone won't believe what I type!

Seems sad to be spending money and time on silly presents. Surely, a far better way of making a Xmas greeting would be making a donation to a charity or sponsoring an endangered animal.

Still worth while giving daft presents to cheer , I do the charity thing as well , love this thread smile

A friend gave me an egg cup with a cover last year, I haven't had a soft boiled egg since August 17th 1972.
DH gave me a wheelbarrow one year.

grannylyn65 Wed 30-Aug-17 13:05:27

gave my sister a mushroom brush one year?

ninathenana Wed 30-Aug-17 13:17:35

confused how do you know the exact date LadyGracie
I like the idea of silly presents but can't think of any recieved or sent.

nina we were living in Germany at the time, it was the date my first child was due, we were going to the hospital for my ante natal appointment then onto the airport to drop off my MIL (grhs). We had soft boiled eggs for lunch, all the way to the hospital the eggs kept repeating on me and I had the most horrendous heartburn. I had my antenatal, continued to the airport still suffering, my waters broke in the airport, we had to leave MIL at the airport and drive back to the hospital, there was an accident on the autobahn, traffic at a standstill, we ended up following a police car with its lights flashing back to the hospital. Quite a memorable day!

One year I gave several of these boiled egg toppers for stocking fillers. The recipients all say they use them regularly and wouldn't want to be without. I missed your thread about egg slicers Kitty, forgive me if this is similar to what you discussed.

At the moment I am giving car owners deer whistles for birthdays, having read about them on GN. They measure only about one cubic inch, so fit neatly inside the grille. I have no idea whether they work, but we haven't hit any deer!

DH made me a cracker one year and I was so excited when he said 'pull it don't open it'. I did and the floor was showered with OXO cubes. He laughed I didn't.

ninathenana Wed 30-Aug-17 17:58:45

Well yes, I can see that would stick in your memory LadyGracie grin

My MIL once gave me two odd earrings. They were almost the same and as she said, they were a bargain!
My dear man friend gave me a stress ballhmm

AHEM and what, pray, is wrong with egg slicers?

I am partial to the occasional egg sandwich, and much prefer it with sliced hard boiled eggs, rather than mashed up with mayonnaise.

May I also take this opportunity to praise Mr P's egg boiling skills, he gets the hard boiled ones just right, no grey ring, and the perfect degree of slight softness to the yolk.

When l had my first baby, with all the excitement of preparing the baby bag for hospital cam the unglamorous task of buying disposable (paper) knickers. We had a few laughs about these, none more so when the OH produced a home-made pair, made from newspaper! They were not dissimilar to a classic paper hat look ...to be worn 'up-side-down of course ... and he had cleverly managed to get a picture of an Andrew puppy on the front ... Or maybe the back grin

By the by, it is possible to donate to charity and have the best of fun for pennies... Suspect the voltarol would be used too!!!!

Imperfect27 Wed 30-Aug-17 20:15:02

Andrew/ Andrew .... Here we go again with the predictive! My MAIL once sent an invitation to my DH for dinner that arrived as "Would you lick my ear?" gringrin

Imperfect27 Wed 30-Aug-17 20:15:49

I rest my case ... That last text read ok before posting ...honest!

lemongrove Wed 30-Aug-17 22:37:37

Nothing wrong with egg slicers, I was given one years ago, and thought, hmmn, will never use that little thing, but guess what, have used it constantly for over forty years.

lemongrove Wed 30-Aug-17 22:37:53

Now I want some egg salad.
