May is Ichthyosis awareness month. Two of my grandsons suffer from x linked ichthyosis or XLI. The condition is passed from mother to son and until grandson no. 1 was diagnosed we had no idea it was in the family. Fortunately my mother was still alive and was able to tell us that two of her brother's had very dry, scaly skin. The boys lack, or have very low levels of the enzyme steroid sulfatases which affects how skin cells are shed. It also seems to have a role in Autism. The research is in its infancy, but it is extremely interesting as I'm sure you know all my grandsons have autism and the two with XLI have ADHD.
