Oh my aching back?

We joined the gym a few weeks ago and had been going 2/3times a week then last week OH complained his back was too bad to go so I was happy to leave him at home, today he said 'I'll come but don't want to aggravate my back so I'll just use the treadmill and do a little bit of slow walking.
So on arriving at the gym we noticed a short mat bowls group playing in one of the community rooms (OH is a bowler) well lo and behold that 'painful' back suddenly improved enough for him to play a couple of games with his 'new best friends'grin in the meantime I got a good workout in the gym.

I too go to the gym 2 or 3 times a week when I can. When I developed back pain my GP advised 'Keep exercising and take pain killers (within reason)' I have followed his advice and it seems to work. Mind you a lot of aches disappear when it is something you want to do (and there is an element of competition)!! Keep up the good work tanith and OH. wink

I'm with your DH on this one. Bowling is far more fun grin

I am gym-phobic. Repetitive abnormal movements can only be bad for you; especially as you age.

Luckygirl I walk, cycle, row and swim no abnormal movements.

What's an abnormal movement?

Since we had this nice sunshine my back and foot plus thumb have all started to ache. I can only think it is something to do with the climate as it was quite chill in the morning and at night. I have had injections in both ankle and thumb in the past. Back is terrible when I get up from sitting but on the opposite side to where it usually is. I am using Volterol and painkillers. It is strange how this flairs up now and again. Usually when weather seems to turn good. I was told to go to Pilates but cannot find a class near me.

Sounds like a match made in the gym, something you can do together.

Pilates is brilliant for backs. I suffered daily pain when I was teaching and having to stand up a lot. Pilates was like a miracle cure!

I couldn't agree more Morgana. If you've got a good instructor who's knowledgeable about the body Pilates is excellent for back problems. My instructor and her husband who's an injuries specialist as well as a Pilates instructor have certainly got me moving again.
I have been to gyms but have never been convinced that the instructors really understand the 'older body'.
