Presents from couples

Without wishing to seem mercenary or vulgar shock, I'm interested to know what other people do when giving presents as a couple. I've never really thought about it before, but do single people who give two individual presents to a couple expect a double whammy , or individually given presents from a couple, or just a present regardless of what has been spent? My children give one present from them both to relatives , with each actually buying the present for their own family , but given from them both. That sounds fine to me , but recently when organising a group present , it was suggested that they should both contribute an equal amount ( even though one partner not working)

Not sure I have understood the scenario atqui but if your DCs were involved in contributing to a group and most of the contributors were single it would seem reasonable to make a contribution per head.
But if most of the contributors were couples the contribution would be per couple. I suppose any singletons might then feel they were paying double if they paid the same as a couple.
Isn't the whole business ghastly.

Its a bit like in a pub when (usually) the men buy rounds. What happens when there are couples and singles?

I'd have thought the gesture was in the giving not the amount or have I got something wrong here.?

I think there is a danger of over-thinking this.
As glamma says, it is surely the gesture not the exact £ and p which matters?
