Dark Evenings

No, not just you, I hate it too. I would much prefer to leave the clocks on summertime, however my best mate always longs for GMT and breathes a sigh of relief when the clocks go back in Autumn. It really seems to affect her. I guess that you will never please everyone.

I taught in a school where the caretaker's wife moaned forever about the hours sleep she lost when the clocks went forward - she was never happy till she got the hour back in October!

They did an experiment for a year or so where the clocks remained forward but it was still dark in some areas of the country whe n children went to school in the mornings - we had a later start time and reduced lunch time to compensate.

I cheer myself up by lighting the wood burner and also candles!

I used to love the dark nights when the kids were small, cosy nights in , fire on, low lights, family doing jigsaws, reading etc but not now. Just feel cut off from the world and look forward to march. Should just be like the bears and hibernate

No it's not just you I find it very depressing I dont like dark nights as Jordana says they were fine when the family was around now just makes you feel cut off i like the hibination idea

I love it. Cosy at home. Fire on , cat curled up and Autumn TV to enjoy. Always loved it.

I don't like it either, in fact I get very depressed and ill this time of year. I start to feel better in the new year.

I'm with you Jane 10, cosy at home with dogs . Woodburner going TV or book and I'm happy. Love autumn and winter.

I hate the darkness and cannot wait till we get past the shortest day and the days draw out again. That is one thing I like about January, the nights are getting shorter. Another is that it is a bloomin' long time till Christmas. Roll on spring.

Sorry, I love it. Means I get to put my feet up instead of being outside working till dusk. Draw the curtains, casseroles in the oven and catch ups on the pile of books and magazines.

I love it and spend most of summer longing for autumn. Cold outside, warm inside, thick sweaters and thick socks, casseroles and comfort food.

I'm very much a summer person but winter doesn't bother me because once Christmas is over I'm on a mission to have all indoor jobs done and dusted before the garden springs into life. By the end of January the nights are drawing out again and winter only has one month left to go.

At the moment it's lovely to dig out the jumpers and scarves and light the woodburner every afternoon. I do think it's important to get outside every day though even for a short time. Fortunately, my dogs agree.

I prefer lighter mornings. Going out into the dark first thing is far worse than going out in the dark at night, for me.

I loathe it when the clocks go back. November is the most depressing month of the year as far as I am concerned, followed a close second by December. I don't like Christmas either so nothing for me to look forward to there. Once the shortest day has passed though I cheer up a bit. I know January and February can be very cold, BUT we are headed the right way. I love seeing those first snowdrops

Winter is the Marmite season for me. Sometimes I love being curled up in the warm with a book, tv or music. Other times I yearn for more day,ight to finish tasks or simply be outside. Ice and snow bother me from a safety angle, so it can be an anxious time. I do love the winter lights around Christmas time, although Christmas itself is becoming stressful.

I think we need the brightness and sparkle of Christmas to get us through the dark Winter nights.I do like Autumn, and this time the tree colours are just fantastic, makes every walk special.

No I don't like dark evenings at all. Today is a bright day and I'm savouring the last of the Autumn leaves, once they're gone winter can, on gloomy days, be bleak. I'm a summer person, I like the long days.

I quite like dark cosy winter nights. But the prospect of catkins in February and the early signs of spring, in just a few months, is worth the wait.

I love this time of year - close the curtains, heating on, good on the tv, Christmas to look forward to - Oh Yes, BRING IT ON!!

I don't mind them at all. Having lived for a long time in countries with only two seasons - hot and stinking hot - I do enjoy ours.
The only month I really don't like is January - all the cheerful Christmas lights gone and seemingly ages till spring.
Long evenings are perfect for catching up with all the TV progs I record and then don't watch for weeks. For a start I have most of Victoria to catch up with.

And I shall do more piano practice - that is if life gets a bit less manic soon and all the family/friend emergencies die down for a bit. I might even sort out some drawers - the ones I've been meaning to do since about last Feb. During the summer there's always something better to do, even if it's only lying on a sunbed in the garden with a book.

Finally, I might dig out a 1000 piece jigsaw I bought not long ago, with long dark evenings specifically in mind, and enjoy wasting many hours on that.

I don't like this time of year when the clocks change, I love the autumn colours of the trees. But until the buds appear on the trees heralding spring I feel quite low, I'm also petrified of the dark so I'm in the house from late afternoon. On the plus side, I do lots of knitting, paint and read mountains of books, cook, eat too much and put on weight!

I hate it too as have to do a rushed dog walk before walk and the same after work. We live opposite beautiful farmland and walking really early and for hours in the evenings in the summer feeds my soul, so I will miss that for a while

I dislike it too, but not half as much as I did when I was working. Getting up in the dark and coming home in the dark - seeing very little daylight in between - I found most depressing.

At least now I can get out in the day so it doesn't seem quite so bad.

Eloethan, I agree with your comment as in the days when I worked full time it was so depressing having darkness during the week and only seeing the daylight at weekends. I think they call it SAD syndrome now but in my day there wasn't a name for it.
I think the autumn leaves are glorious but my moyther thought it was terribly sad to see the dying leaves falling on the ground.
Interesting to notice opposing views here, how some people love dark evenings and others find them very depressing.

It drastically reduces my driving time, I no longer feel confident driving in the dark, not that I go anywhere much.

A native American chief said ' only a white man would take an inch from a blanket, stitch it onto the top and consider that they have a bigger blanket' (paraphrasing wildly)

Maybe we should work less and live more but we haven't learnt how yet.
