We have a shopping list on the noticeboard in the kitchen. If someone uses the last of something, or we're getting low, it's put on the list straight away (in theory, but works quite well!).

Sit him down and quietly explain to him that the fairies who usually replace things are on strike and he needs either to go out and buy more himself or tell you (preferably the former!)

We also have a shopping 'cat' chalk board Ana, they weren't on there either! Our system generally works.

We do exactly the same as Ana. It's a magnetic board on the fridge, with a tear off shopping list pad (i.e. long and narrow). We have got into the habit of adding items from the bottom of the page upwards, instead of the more usual top down - this way if one of us is nipping out for something we can tear off the bit that's written on and leave the rest of the page for next time!
And we're both responsible for adding things that have run out.

I've just done the smallest online shop ever. I went to get our fridge list and it was totally blank. We always need fruit and bread, so never bother putting those on the list. It might all have something to do with me over stocking on a big scale last week for the family all coming round on Sunday. Oh, if only it were always so easy.

Mine uses the last of something (tea bag, biscuit or whatever), fails to mention it and leaves the empty packet in the cupboard. He uses up his deodorant and then says 'I haven't got any deodorant' usually when I've just come back from the shops having asked him if there was anything he wanted and he replied 'no'.
