Wedding gift anxt!

We're going to a wedding in 3 weeks time. I spent ages debating on a gift for the couple and finally saw a really nice lantern on a shopping channel which one of the presenters said would make a lovely wedding present so I ordered it. It's very big (about 27 inches high) with glass sides and contains 3 pre-lit candles. It wasn't a fortune so I also added a £50 store card and wrapped it all up last week. Now my husband has said he didn't 'get it' and doesn't think it's suitable which of course has now put doubts in my mind. Although we've known the groom all his life (he's in his 40s) we've never been to their house so have no idea what sort of tastes they have and I'm now thinking I maybe should rush out and try to find something else. Anyone think I should stick with my first choice? Help!

Well it's sounds like something that wouldn't be to everyone's taste, especially if you haven't seen their home. But if you go with what you've already done, they'll have the storecard, and if they don't like the lantern they could put it in the garden or regift it discreetly, they might love it of course!

I would say it was a pretty neutral present. I'm sure they will appreciate both gifts. I dislike shopping for gifts with DH. We rarely agree, even though I know I'm right! Most times he doesn't come up with a better suggestion. His go to present is a book, for all occasions.

Thanks - I didn't add that it is suitable for garden use which is where I would put it (and where it will go if I end up keeping it) smile

I would always be wary of a decorative gift when I wasn't too sure about the recipient's taste.
If it was QVC they will give you a full refund and I would then either top up the gift card or buy something like white fluffy towels to be on the safe side.

As you have already bought it ,give it! I'm sure it will be fine. Why do men put the dampeners on things when the purchase has been made!!!

Yes the lantern sounds great especially if it can be for outdoor use, ignore your husband and trust your instincts

Thanks for your comments - I'm still torn (part of me really wanted to keep it anyway as I love lights and candles). We're going out today to have a look and see if there's anything else we could get - if I don't find anything they'll get it - if I do - well my garden will look lovely grin

IMO The art of buying a good present is to buy something you would like to receive! So you seem to have got it right!

You could give it,but a £50 store card is very very generous on its own surely.

I think charity shops and eBay do very nicely out of things given which the donor would like to receive! No the art of giving is to give something the recipient will love.
My "objet d'art" may well be your "bit of tat". Did nobody else get the ghastly wedding present from Auntie like the vase that lived in the under stairs cupboard only to be brought out when she came to visit??

I'd give it to them. You can't go wrong with a lantern, particularly if it is also suitable for outdoor use. We have several different lamps and lanterns. They cheer up a dark corner.

Well I'm happy to say we've found a perfect gift for the happy couple and also a similar lovely gift for our son and DIL's silver wedding next month AND I've got a great lantern - sorted all ways round. Of course OH is priding himself on having found said gifts - just hope he doesn't spill the beans grin

Do tell - what did you get then?

Willow500 Sun 14-Aug-16 05:32:30

We got them some very beautiful glassware in creams and blacks and for son & DIL similar in greys and black mottled with silver - hard to describe but very pretty and not over the top large either. Have to say sometimes he is quite good at spotting things and will occasionally find just the right thing I'm looking for clothing wise too. That said he hates shopping grin
