I doubt if there will be much change whichever way the vote goes. There will still be long discussions about it and I have had enough- we have to accept the poll vote on Friday.

I don't suppose all those strong emotions will just disappear. There will be recriminations as there will be sorely disappointed not to say angry people regardless of who 'wins'.

well, shall we see who is full of recriminations [on here] and who just accepts a democratic vote.... that will be interesting.

as to the country in general, it will rumble on for a bit assisted by the media and then fade away [hopefully.]

I fear recriminations and continuing angst from the losing side for a long time. Farage is already talking about a second referendum if Remain wins by anything other than a landslide. I wonder if he would be saying the same for a 51/49 win for leave ?

I think there might be a long queue of people with their cases packed leaving the country. And a long queue with their cases packed waiting to get in!

Of course they might just be going on holiday

Whatever the decision we must live with it and let bygones be bygones and move on. as those of us who didn't get our choice of government in the last election moved on. We had to accept the outcome then and we will have to accept it on Friday.

I think that is what is bothering me Anya. Lots of people seem to find it hard to accept what happened in the last election and to move on.

Some people seem to think that anyone who holds a different 'political' view from themselves, whether it be voting in the general election or voting in or out, is all bad. I worry that we will have huge divisions remaining as we did after the last election and more intolerance than before.

I think there might be riots in certain cities and we may have a long period of unrest.

We will all need to live with the decision either way. For me the horror has been seeing hatred of immigrants from people on line and in life. I read a piece written by a Polish man this morning - he has been living in UK since the mid eighties - it is for him the feeing of not really being wanted. It is OK saying to immigrants already in the UK 'you can stay' or 'we don't mean you'
- but they will feel that they are all lumped together. I hope we can just repair this dreadful damage which has been let free by this unnecessary referendum.

There was lots of vitriol and bitterness before the referendum welshwife. It has been worse in the run up but will it stop after?

OK I know I'm a bad person but in the event of a (God forbid) brexit vote I know I will want to run around personally smacking anyone who voted for it! I'm generally a pretty peaceloving person but this has really got me going. Goodness knows how others might react! Sigh.

It has only just dawned on me that getting the results by areas won't help either!

Jane10, I am relieved you live a long way from me. Really do not fancy a smacking. Thought the remainers were supposedly the peaceful lot anyway!

Seriously I don't think people are any more intolerant etc than they ever were before. Its just that the internet and modern communications enable us to share opinions and argue with completely anonymous strangers in a way that was unimaginable even a decade ago.

I think people have suddenly decided that it is now acceptable to voice opinions which have lain dormant and not PC for a long time. They may have been quietly intolerant before but now it is out in the open we can see how prevalent it is. I think there are faults on both sides - many immigrants have failed to try and integrate in any way and this has not helped the situation and maybe Brits have failed in many cases to be welcoming enough.
In the sixties I did some teaching in Hounslow which has always had a large immigrant population due to its position near to Heathrow and London. I was teaching Migrant children ( mainly Indian and Pakistani) English. Their Maths work was excellent. When we had an open evening the thing that most of the father's were pleased about was not if I had been teaching their child to read English but if the child had told them I was kind to them!! Interestingly none of the mothers came to see me!

We've always had immigrants but somehow some seem to try to integrate much more than others.

Welshwife I agree with you that the referendum has resulted in many people voicing opinions that would have been previously perceived as intolerance or not PC. This in itself is not a bad thing and above all, the politicians need to listen to what is being said. My concern is this that the perceptions which were not based on facts will not be challenged or corrected, and I worry we will become a less tolerant country.

Yes there's no doubt all sorts of nonsense have somehow mutated into 'facts'.

I think we will slump back into apathy whatever the vote - we do after general elections and just accept what has happened. Jane 10 I have voted Leave and you're not smacking me sweetie!!!

I'm still undecided whether to go in to M&S today and grab some euros. If they've got any left.
