2 is a foreign number. Def not HMRC. Anyway they don't tell you that you've committed fraud until they have you neatly arrested

Last week DH 'won' £825, 000 in the People's Lottery! Phone number to claim. Exciting!

I guess the purpose will be to get you to give your card info so you can quickly pay up what you are "owing".

Oh dear. I must also have transgressed in some way as my accounts at Santander, PayPal and HSBC have all been limited/blocked in some in the last week. Apparently if I click on the links given and input my account details all will be well. Phew - that's alright then. [Duh!]

My Paypal is blocked at regular intervals too. Odd really because I closed mine yonks ago.

Scammers ring you from a fake number to tell you that a lawsuit is to be taken out against you - without first addressing you by name, just a general phone call to whoever lifts the phone.

A genuine call about a lawsuit would make VERY sure that they had the right person before telling you about it. Even a scammer would use your name to make you think it was genuine, if they were phoning you specifically. This sounds like the shotgun approach - fire off enough shot and you could get a hit.

In the US, they use a 202 code, which is Washington, to make it sound official.

It is a scam to scare you into sending them money to head off possible legal proceedings. Don't fall for it! Don't even return the phone call - it is probably to a number which will cost you ££££ per minute.

'My' PayPal has suspicious activity on it which clearly must be really suspicious since there isn't one! There seem to be so many scammers out there nowadays.

Report it to the Information Commissioners Office ico.org.uk/ They collect information so as to form a case against these scammers.

I received an email about my PayPal account too. Interesting thing is I've never had one !

I tend to just delete all these things but if it might help to stop them will do as you suggest and report it in future Elegran.

A pensioner near us has lost £10,000 on this scam. I cannot believe how anyone could do what she did. She was asked to repay it using iTunes vouchers. So she did.

Don't ask me the whys and wherefore sir the case but it was reported in the local paper.
