Child Car Seats

My DIL is expecting 2nd baby soon. Went to order new cover for car seat but was told that as the seat would be nearly 5 years old (used for DGS) it would no longer be safe to use as the plastic it is made from degrades over time. I did not know or realise that car seats had a lifespan! Has anyone else heard of this? It is going to be an extra expense to buy a new one.

Just buy a new cover online. If the seat really needs it.

First I've heard of it. Surely it would need to be stated on the box with a warning if it were true.

Well, having just googled this it's true !!
They have an expiry date of about 6-10 yrs, which will usually be stated on the label underneath or stamped in the plastic somewhere.

Oh crumbs. I'm using one that was bought 8 years ago and they are a fortune to replace.

Yes, we discovered this when someone offered DD a secondhand car seat and another friend warned her about how it was over 5 years old etc. So we googled it - and I bought a new one. Didn't want to take any chances with this so longed for little one.

I have looked into this further and contacted the manufacturer of the car seat. They recommend changing the seat after 10 years (as long as it has not been in an accident). It seems different manufacturers have different lifespans for their goods, so best to check.
