Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

Season of wasps and creepies and crawlies
Spiders like soup plates and moths in the light
Sneaking the fire on when no one is looking
Hotties or blanket to get through the night.
Searching for socks and hunting for cardies
Chutneys and jams and cooking of soups.
Crisp sunny morning when all mist has lifted
But unwelcome Christms card catalogues now on the doormat
Summer is gone, is it Hallowe'en yet?

Summer is gone! Not in Southend it hasn't. Still hot here.

rosesarered Fri 11-Sept-15 14:16:55

Alright for some, Petra, lounging about on the beach there with an ice cream are you?grin
Alea, spiders like soup plates, shudder, that's the bit of early Autumn I hate.

M0nica Fri 11-Sept-15 14:23:59

Today, for the first time I noticed that the trees around our house are beginning to turn,

Autumn is also the time of hedgerow foraging; blackberries, sloes, damsons and greengages, even apples and later crab apples Brought home and eaten raw or frozen for later consumption.

Luckygirl Fri 11-Sept-15 15:28:16

We can always tell when autumn is just around the corner when we look out of our bedroom balcony doors in the morning, because there is a thread of mist tracking the river down in the valley.

Bellanonna Fri 11-Sept-15 15:36:03

Oh what a view that sounds LG. in which part of the UK do you live ?

Greyduster Fri 11-Sept-15 15:36:25

You've just remind me about the sloes! We look to have a good crop down the lane this year. Haven't finished last year's sloe gin yet!

hildajenniJ Fri 11-Sept-15 15:39:09

Autumn is definitely on the way here. The trees on the roadside are turning yellow. There is a chill in the air, and this morning everything looked crisp and clean on my way home from work. There are brambles ripening in the hedgerows, and the swallows and house martins are gathering together on the wires. Winter will be long and hard I think.
Brambles peeping through the Leylandii.

Some of the trees on the golf course are turning brown and there are a few of those lovely ones that turn bright red and look as though they are on fire. Worst of no swallows today - I think they have gone. sad

We are in south Herefordshire and the river we overlook is in Wales.

Whenever I type in Herefordshire I get the dreaded wavy red line! - Hertfordshire seems to be acceptable though!

Luckygirl just teach your computer's dictionary the word. Right click and 'add to dictionary' I think it is. On my iMac it's ctrl+click and 'learn spelling'.

The executive committee members at the SU where I worked would, many years ago, use the offices after hours and log on to staff computers. One year one of the members was dyslexic, and every time he got the red underline, because he couldn't tell from the list of suggestions which was the right spelling, he simply added his version to the computer dictionary, thereby rendering all our spellchecks utterly worthless!

This is written very speedily so please forgive multitudinous imperfections - to the tune of My Favourite Things.

Mouldy and mildewed and creepy with spiders
Earwigs and owlhoots, and mice shock - now insiders
Nasty cold floors in the chill light of dawn
Boots all lined up, with big coats to be worn...

When the stags bark
When the frost forms
Then I feel forlorn.
I simply remember my butterfly wings
And for the lost summer, mourn!

Indinana Fri 11-Sept-15 17:10:56

And of course I sang that all the way through! Well done janer I love it smile

Bellanonna Fri 11-Sept-15 17:19:37
