It's called 'signed for' these days, but anyway, does anyone know what happens if the postman knocks on the door with a letter and the recipient refuses to sign for it?

It would get taken back I imagine. I've sent a few things recorded delivery/signed for and you can log on to track it and actually see a copy of the signatory.

Yes, I suppose what I was wondering is what gets displayed on the tracking webpage. At the moment the status just says 'being processed through our network', so I wondered whether the system records a refusal or not.

DD, who works for Royal Mail, says it should be scanned as refused and returned to sender. If the postie ticks the refused box it should be recorded on the system,

Cheers Pittcity, I posted a couple of RC letters on Thursday for next Tuesday. One arrived yesterday but the other is still in the system. I was just wondering whether to fork out £6 posting another copy registered on Monday.

Out of five first class letters I've posted in the last fortnight, three have gone 'missing'.
