I decided to do volunteer work in a charity shop. I thought they'd say, "Come on in!" but I had to fill up an application form and give 2 references, who were sent forms to tell lots about me. Then came an interview when they emphasised that the shop is a business, with sales targets and everything dictated by Head Office. There was a health form asking if I suffered from any of 20 conditions.
This charity is a local hospice, not a national organisation.
I got the job and will do it but was rather put off by the beaurocracy and health-and-safety nonsense required to steam second-hand clothes!
