I was just thinking - are we still typists? Or are we keyboardists or even swipists?
I'm a self taught typist (or any of the above) but boy, am I fast. I think I inherited the typing gene from my mother who was the fastest in her typing pool. Years ago when they were bringing in computers where I worked
all the staff did aptitude tests and I was selected to be trained, although I didn't work as a typist. My daughter, when she types, her fingers literally blur on the keyboard, they seem to float above the keys.
I love typing, I find it soothing. I used to absolutely love copy typing from handwriting, I'd love the way the jumble of scratchy words would flow from the paper via me in this ordered fashion, grammar and spelling being fixed as I go, which nowadays doesn't happen anymore, because everyone does their own typing. Same with dictation though, I used to love transforming spoken words on to paper.
All this keyboard stuff makes me wonder too - we use both hands, not just one hand as for writing - does that affect how the brain engages with the fingers?
Anyone without keyboard skills is lost in the workplace these days, and at one time the "typist" was often at the bottom of the pecking order.
How is it for you?
