Potato potato potato

Loved it! Reminds me of a local farmer who put up a sign saying "Spuds for sale", when I asked his son why he had used the word spuds, he said it was because his father couldn't spell potato!!

The potato is much under-rated - those roasties made my mouth water! No to mention tiny new potatoes with butter, mashed potatoes with grated cheese, and Belgian style crisp brown chips. How long is to lunch time?

How could I forget the jacket potato - I fill mine with various things, such as shrimp or egg mayonnaise.

Just cobs of cheese and butter for me!

Life without potatoes would almost be as bad as life without bananas! What sad lives the people of this country lived with their miserable selection of root vegetables before we discovered the Americas, not so good for them though cos we only gave them the common cold and a lot worse!

I agree, BAnanas - I don't crave anything sweet, but I would hate to give up potatoes (or bread).

Hee hee - I have just had a salmon fillet, buttered carrots and some lovely boiled potatoes coated in butter, with pepper and garlic salt.

I need a jacket potato now and I haven't got one!

I'm having homemade tomato soup instead with some tomato and basil bread! May put a smidgen of grated Parmesan on top!

I love potatoes too. But I don't like jacket potatoes done in the microwave, so I'll rarely order them when I'm out. For me they must be baked in the oven.

Eloethan I agree about microwaved jacket potatoes, although they can be crisped up by briefly baking in the oven, but lots of "jacket" potatoes on pub menus are neither baked nor microwaved. They are simply unpeeled large potatoes that have been boiled. Within the meaning of the act but not within the spirit, methinks.

The crisp skin is what 'makes' a jacket potato for me.

To get rid of some of the calories, I usually scoop out some of the inside and put the filling in the shell. Cottage cheese with chives from the garden is a favourite or tuna mashed up with philly light and a spoonful of mayo.

Are there a lot of calories in potato?
