Drunken exploits

When I was 31 I threw up in the kitchen sink of a very good friend after a party trouble was in the sink waiting to be washed was her precious family dinner service , I was so mortified that I never drank again to this day. There were other reasons too but this was the clincher.. I've been teetotal for over 30 years now..

I was member of the MEAF Band, Cyprus in the late 50s. We visited a R&R camp and as well as playing, we were able to use the facilities - and I got pretty well stewed. Around midnight, it seemed like a good idea to go for a swim in the moonlight, on my own... reaching the beach, in my confused state I took my swimming trunks off, and headed into the water, which was nice and warm. Floating around, I met one of my colleagues, we said 'hi!' and carried on drifting about... eventually I had had enough and went back to the beach - now to find my trunks - in the moonlight every little hollow could have been my discarded sportswear - and every time I tried to pick one up I fell over -- amazingly I eventually found them, and went back to my tent and fell into bed.

Next morning I felt sand-blasted all over - being wet from the sea, and falling over in the sand - it had all stuck to me, and the bed was full of it - my sheets were like sandpaper!

Another time, in Nairobi, it seemed like a good idea to take a taxi back to the camp - with me riding on the bonnet...

DS1 went to the company Christmas do when he was a Saturday boy at Curry's. It was held at a Greek restaurant that he had heard had a bad hygience reputation so, rather than eat the food, he kept drinking! He was dropped at the bottom of our road and, we surmise given the state of his knees and trousers, crawled 200 yards home. He then proceeded to lie on the lounge floor giggling and telling us that he loved us all. We have had YEARS of teasing out of that!

When I was twenty I drank too much and started to feel really ill. I was walking around Birmingham city at the time with my boyfriend (now DH).
I lay down in the gutter and refused to move, even though boyfriend said 'there's a policeman coming'.

It was that bad I just didn't care.

Only other time, I was thirty something and overdid it at what promised to be a wild party and had to go home before things got wild.

Very disappointed.

When we were first married, we were invited to dinner by ex-h's former housemate. As it was raining hard and although it was only a few hundred yards away on the same campus, we took the car. However, another couple got lost and were about an hour late during which time, we availed ourselves of the duty free booze supplied by our host's girlfriend who worked at an embassy in Nairobi. Well-oiled by the time the missing guests turned up, we saw no reason to stop drinking. Next morning, we had no idea how or when we had got back to our house, but the car was very neatly parked outside. To this day, who was driving is still a mystery. Ex-h was too 'unwell' to teach that day and I regret to say we had to hold a bucket for each other. It may have been on that day that DS1 was conceived...

I'm going to plead the fifth on this one!

Oh, phoenix- chicken!

Making a complete and utter a**e of myself on a first date. When I was between husbands. I have consigned details to the trash bin section of my mind.
Note to any newly divorced grans: Don't. However nervous you are. Alcohol won't help.

Apparently, one year I made the best Christmas lunch ever but, having finished off the champagne while the rest of them were at the pub, I don't remember it!

Might try that again this year!

The worst thing I did was probably in the early 1970s driving home from a very boozy works New Year party through North London (before drink drive rules.) I am horrified about that now.

At an NWR summer barbeque I got so drunk on home made wine and was having such I good time that I forgot to pick my DD up from Guides. I have never been allowed to forget that!

I last got legless on a ramblers holiday in Greece in about 2002. Yes I was then old enough to know better! At the dinner the wine was flowing too freely but what really got me and DH was the ouzo.

Afterwards the room was moving, by 6am I was sitting by the toilet throwing up. Then crawled back to bed to recover. About midday we made it out to a cafe for some tonic water and then walked delicately around the harbour. I eventually discovered I was wearing one flip flop and one trekking sandal. (On different feet I hasten to say.)

Given that I have usually managed to make it to a loo to throw up. I do have some standards!

How sweet that everybody is talking in the past...................

Ramblers' holidays have also been the scene of my finest hours, Nellie. In Majorca, under the influence of free-flowing sangria , I remembered and - heaven help us - sang all the verses of Loch Lomond. Can I remember them - or sing them - now? No.

Oh and then there was the time we went to a posh wedding in one of the "inns" in the legal section in London. A social worker DH knew was marrying a leftie barrister.
Lots of champagne on an empty stomach (not even a kiosk open to buy something for lunch beforehand in that area, so on an empty stomach). More wine with meal. Rather grand surroundings - oak beams, portraits of illustrious judges etc. Bit like an Oxford college dining hall - one of the older ones m'dear. Picture Hogwarts if that helps.
Finally, after port, stagger to the ladies where, while queueing, I announce, very loudly, in this bastion of the legal system "What we need now girls, is a joint!"
I hasten to add this was about 20 years ago and I don't do that kind of thing any more, except when I go to GN parties.

An engineers party before I married! Many drinks and I was the only one who could remember all the verses of
We are, we are, we are the engineers
We can, we can demolish 40 beers etc

There is a North west meet up tomorrow. Who knows what might happen! Greatnan might start dancing on the table, Anno on the bar! She and When are on good terms with the the barman.
I shall stay sober and report back.
