Can you use a staple gun? You can heat the vinyl to make it go on smoothly (a hairdryer?).

We've covered headboards with fabric and one with leatherette using a staple gun.

I buy oil cloth off eBay by the metre it's the cheapest place I found. I would staple it in place . I have made bags with it and used a heavy duty needle in my sewing machine. Don't try pinning I use little clips which I also buy off eBay .

But first check your grandsons parents would be happy him using it . I brought a high /low chair from Argos which my grandson love . It was padded and you took the padding out as he got bigger. Even when he could reach the table he insisted on having the tray on as it has a cup holder indent . Used large piece of oil cloth to cover my carpet.

I have a staple gun, but worried little grandson will somehow work a staple loose...It's such a long time since mine were little and I'm so much more anxious these days.

I think the staples are much stronger than ordinary staples used for paper.

I can understand the anxiety though, it's similar to that when we have our first child!

It’s definitely not worth the trouble and effort. My son bought one from Ikea really cheap.

If you enjoy doing stuff enjoy and have the satisfaction when you see it in use. Regarding upholstery staples they go in with such horse that you will have a job getting them out if you misposition them. let alone little fingers
