I suppose she could ditch the handbag as she always has a LiW nearby with ‘essentials’. That said, I read somewhere that if she’s chatting to someone and wants to move on, she transfers the handbag to her other arm and that’s the signal to her staff.
Clever.

It gives her something to do with her hands, so that she isn't tempted to clock some of the people she has to chat sweetly with.

You would imagine she has her glasses in her handbag. Obviously didn’t many years ago when a news clip showed her rummaging (their words not mine) through her handbag, then cooly announcing that her husband, the D of E, would be reading her speech. He proceeded to rattle it off fluently, but it was fairly clear that she was minus her specs that day.

I bet the L in W always has a spare pair in her own handbag since then.
