I don’t know if this has been done before, but as it’s David Attenborough’s 100th birthday today, who else do you consider to have this overused title? After Sir David, who I imagine is most people’s number one, I would say Michael Palin, Judy Dench and possibly controversially Joanna Lumley. I’ll probably think of more but they would be my top four.

Not sure about Chris. Steve Backshall would be my nominee

Chris Packham is a natural successor to Attenborough and I much prefer him anyway. So I would nominate him as a national treasure of the future!

I don't think anyone is a national treasure are lucky to be in the right place at the right time .David Attenborough is a good presenter but I think the camera men are the ones who make a nature programme good.

Johnny Morris.
I loved Animal Magic!!!
I'm humming the tune in my head. smile

I find David Attenborough depressing and switch over every time I hear his voice. There's always some poor creature in desperate jeopardy.
The people who really turned me on to animals were (don't laugh) Beatrix Potter and then Johnny Morris. I loved Beatrix Potter's illustrations and still somehow hope, that out of our sight, the creatures live the cosy lives she described. As to Johnny Morris his voicing if the various animals was so funny and touching.
I know. I'm shallow.

I like David Attenborough and always have but every time I hear his name I remember a rather rude pastor at a church I used to go to (I no longer attend that one ) referring to him as David Rabbitburrow. He didn’t like him at all.
I think Helen Mirren is pretty good, anything she is in seems to be a good watch.

Michael Caine is a good choice, i think.

National treasures need to be respected, and some musicians like Mick Jagger and David Bowie were maybe a bit too scandalous to be described as national treasures

National Oddities?

Surely Bowie would be a "Space Oddity" grin

Yes, that was going through my mind 😁

Yes, now I know what a national treasure is, probably not Mick Jagger, Chestnut.

I was watching a programme about Maggie Smith last evening.

My goodness what a good actor she was.

I do think we are blessed with some extraordinary individuals in the U.K. They can’t all be treasures, but we should treasure their contribution to our cultural life.

How Google defines a national treasure:
A national treasure is a person, object, structure, or cultural work officially or popularly recognized as having exceptional value, representing a nation's identity, history, or core values. It often signifies something beloved by the public or, in some countries, legally protected due to its immense cultural significance.
Beloved Individuals: Often used to describe renowned, long-serving, and respected public figures—such as actors, musicians, or broadcasters—who are widely adored.

National treasures need to be respected, and some musicians like Mick Jagger and David Bowie were maybe a bit too scandalous to be described as national treasures, or were they? 😂

MissAdventure Sun 10-May-26 09:34:53

Mick jagger, maybe?

Chestnut Sun 10-May-26 00:31:50

Isn't Paul McCartney a national treasure? I'd say so. 😍

Then that brings in a few others like Elton John and Tom Jones, both have been loved and adored for the last 50-60 years.

Basgetti Sat 09-May-26 23:15:00

I claimed a couple of others. Siobhan Redmond would be there too, for me.

Well yes, it did. Sorry.

Well, it wasn't.

It was an opportunity to name some Scottish National Treasures apart from Sean Connery.

If you want go claim him please do though 🤔

Your last post came across as being very superior, Allira.
UK means United Kingdom.
Not England, then those other places.

😂😂😂

Superior - moi?

I don't live in England either.
